But I'm sure Ritchie mentioned something about the type of players he wanted not being available until the end of august, which was yesterday.

Now to me, it speaks volumes that he went on holiday this week. Maybe he'd already decided that he'd let other clubs scrabble around yesterday for permanent deals often paying a little over the odds. When he returns he'll know exactly what big signings have been made in the Prem and who as a result within their squads might be displaced and become available on loan spells.

Maybe he wants players in on loan that we could not even contemplate buying yesterday.

As I say, I could be talking out my arse.

    Probably true in part

although I think his main loan target went to Newcastle, and with Nardiello closer to a return, perhaps less of a rush. I am however, slightly concerned that nowhere in any interview or comment has AR mentioned needing a centre half and a left back, but then again, theres no consistency in anything he says on the transfer front anyhow. having trawled through soccerbase (!!) most of the players I think within our reach and that would improve what we have, are now with Championship sides, and are their managers willing to let them out to a rival?

we've got a decent starting 11, and have avoided injuries so far, hence our unexpected points total. a telling factor on our squad depth was the lack of interest in any of our fringe players. the supporting cast is pretty *****, basically.

Fred Perry will see us reight.

And I too, am hoping that Ritchie's public comments do not preclude the addition of quality defenders to our squad.

If we'd kept 5 clean sheets we'd have won every game so far.

Yeah, but he's also a big fan of youngsters and is perhaps looking at those that have been pushed off the bench by recent movements and he can demonstrate some ability in helping them develop. Who knows though. I just think with Ritchie being on holiday, the likelihood of us getting permanent deals was slim. I'm sure most players moving to a club would at least want to meet their new boss and see if their is some connection and they share the same ambitions?

    Speculative offers for players

and reports on radio of our frustration falls into the same category as 'box office signings', bit disappointing, but what if a club had made an offer for one of our players? did the manager leave a list of who can leave and who cant?

we need a centre half in for the Stoke game, and ideally a left back. he's got a few days, lets see what happens. Tonge or Austin at right back and Williams at left back spells defeat, negative, but true.

Harsh on Tonge that one. I fear Hassell will be found out at centre half

    Before a ball was kicked

I said 4th bottom will do, and I maintain that.

Ever the realist. Got some scraps coming up against the Stokes and Burnleys of this world. Hope our new found free flowing footballers can adapt. Sure they can.

Id take staying up on goal difference

but I dont think Norwich will be a one off, so I hope we've got at least 1 point more than the bottom 3. most of bottom clubs have spent money in last week. hope we've still got funds available in Jan...

Worried that Colchester can attract a player instead of us, but of course other factors may have played a part.

Earlier on in the season Ritchie said that he didn't think that strengthening the sqaud per se was urgent - notwithstanding 1 or 2 key positions. He added that would give the club some leeway come Christmas if things were a bit awry.

I still think the main point so far is that Ritchie really does think his current squad have it in them to play at this level consistently, and that being so, unless he can get in specific players he think will augment the squad, then there's no great rush to sign players just for the sake of it.

Him & Holden have got us this far, the least they deserve from Barnsley fans is some time to take the squad forward.

I'm sure some of the more vociferous on here are 'winding up' their fellow bbs-ers, but I still think that internet Barnsley fans are, with the exception of me, thee and people we like, a set of bairning mawngy *******.
