Last season we bough in McIndoe and sold him three months later at a profit, Togwell who can't have cost much Davey has since spent a fortune by our standards - lots of it wasted - and we are going to end up finishing a couple of places higher and a handful of points better off. Surely this is not good enough by anybody's standards
performances have been improved on the vast majority though ya carnt argue with that, and nobody was winging a few months ago when we was in and around the playoffs.
To be honest our league position should be better The cup run and associated ticket fiasco have, if nothing else, deflected attention somewhat from our dismal league form. I dread to think what this board would be full of this week were it not for the upcoming FA cup game. However, I suspect it wouldn't have made pleasant reading for Simon Davey. Also, the fact that the cup run has gone some substantial way to offsetting his spending this season will hurt his cause none. We have to realise, I guess, that proven Championship quality players want good wages and want to play for teams with realistic promotion aspirations. I mean, if you'd scored 20 goals at this level last season would you want to play for a bottom-half side? Hence our manager is left to gamble on lower league players and foreigners. Some of these gambles have paid off but conspicuously the most expensive players have all flopped. Personally speaking, at the start of the season I'd have taken 16th or better with the money we've spent. That is not by any stretch out of the question and so at the moment yes, it's good enough. But we need to turn our league form around and a home game on Saturday against a local bottom-3 side is a pretty high profile acid test.
No one can argue that we have wasted a lot of money Don't know how much we have spent on Mossto, Odejayi, Christensen and Ferenczi but it's a lot and it's all been wasted, then there's the wages for Kozluk and Johnson who will be on a decent amount and have hardly played. We could have acheived what we have so far on a 1/3 of the money we have spent
RE: I think you need to read that again nt meant to say no one can argue with the fact that we have wasted a lot of money I am sure you know what I meant Journo so let's not start getting too picky
We could If we had a manager with 100% success rate on gambles. But if anyone had that knack, they'd just play the lottery every week instead of having the stress of being a football manager. Meanwhile, I think Ferenczi earned his transfer fee last season. I have no idea why he just can't seem to get going this season but his contribution last year all but secured Championship status. If he never plays again he was still a good signing, and lest we forget, the most prolific striker on the books! Davey's gambles so far have made a good number small wins and break evens and a small number of heavy losses. But if the club remains on a sound financial footing and progress, however steady, is being made, you won't hear me complaining. Unless fecking Wednesday beat us...
RE: No one can argue I can sort of agree with you mate BUT it happens, that's football managers have to take gambles all the great managers have had them not pay off Fergie and Veron redknapp and Nugent etc . Plus none of the names you mentioned come close to whoever signed mike sheron now he was a waste of money. Although I can a see waste of money and SD needs to look at this before borrowing Crynes Egg card again
dont count your chickens pal. if we lose to weds on saturday, we are in real ****. we might be much worse off than last season. id settle for a draw and keep the gap as it is.
Do you think we are on a sound financial footing? I'm at a loss as to how we can afford the wages of such a big squad on the gates we get. Maybe we can, I don't know, but I'd be surprised. I'm sure our success in the cup has helped in that department, but we can't always rely on that. Obviously, I'm not privy to our financial situation, but we do seem to have spent a lot of money on transfer fees and we do have a very big squad yet our attendances are actually lower than last season.
RE: Do you think We are in debt there is no possible way we cannot be . But I don’t think we will be after March if you look at the home games we have coming up Blunts, Fowls and Ruskys. The money side of is the one thing I don’t worry about with us. Gordon Sheppard would not let us get in to a position like the admin years
So you call assembling a team capable of beating Liverpool lack of progress? 9 homes wins by February lack of progress? Beating 3 of the top 4 lack of progress? The siginings of Muller, Da Silva, Macken, Souza, Campbell-Ryce, Foster and Kozluk have vastly improved the quality of our squad. None of these have been a waste of money. Quite the opposite. The major negative about this season is the away form, which is simply awful. But how you can say there has been a lack of progress is baffling!
Feel we are better than last season, and if only two places are the difference then still succes in my opinion. For me, not many of SD signings are failures. Muller, Souza, Foster, JCR, Macken, Bruma all done well. Fair enough the strikers he signed haven't sent the world on fire, but only K.O. getting a regular run out. Kozluk's admitted he's had loads of small injuries not helping him get that regular spot.
Look at the players that have been a success JCR, Nayatanga, Souza, De silva, Muller, Macken, Leon & Foster. These players will no doubt be added to for next season. Weve already had a good cup run and if we finish one point higher than last season its been a success.
