    I think the poor way that the sentence is constructed...

    ...implies that Sothend have scuppered their promotion hopes by signing darren Byfield.  I suspect that the writer of the sentence is actually trying to tell us that their chances have been blighted by the fact that they have NOT signed said striker.</p>
