Hope you can help me. we bought a 12 week old westie on tuesday afternoon, the first couple of nights she didnt cry much but tonight we locked up downstairs at 8.30 and she has cried and yelped since. its mine and the girlfriends 1st puppy and i just wondered if this is normal. thanks
yes it is mate, the best thing to do is ignore it. If you give in to the pup then it will think it is dominant, it has to learn who is the boss , or it will take over
yeah we are leaving her. how many days do you reckon she will be like this for?. (ps theres been silence for 5 mins now ) thanks
Your probably going to be in for someless nights, its like having a new baby because its all strange to the poor little puppy whose been used to sleeping with its brother and sisters. We tried giving ours fluffy toys in her bed and even tried leaving a clock ticking because i was told it was like the mothers heartbeat but nothing much worked and we ended up giving in to her and she now sleeps at the side of our bed. Some settle faster than others though so just be patient for a few nights.
Whatever you do don't give in!! You will regret it if you do. It's going to be hard work for a few days. You'll have sleepless nights and the heart strings will be stretched somewhat, but whatever you do, don't give into it and bring it into the bedroom with you! It will settle down eventually.
cheers sue. its not realy an issue this week because me and the missus are off work but im back to being up at 5am on monday so im abit worried. iv tried clock ticking too(N)
Remedy that often works Wrap a warm hot water bottle in a towel and place it under the pup.
It helps it to feel more secure - after missing it's mum.

mum got a westie cross a couple of weeks ago, same thing but she has settled down now. She has got her a dog cage, first time she's ever done that but it seems to have settled the pup - own space, and keeps her in one place during the night
Wrap a clock up and put it under a pillow where it sleeps making sure there are no sharp bits sticking out of course. The ticking reminds the pup of it's mum's heartbeat and calms it down.
