Employment and the Law: under 16s

A child whose 16th birthday occurs between 1st September and 31st August (both dates inclusive) is of compulsory school age until the last Friday in the June of that year.

On the day after the last Friday in June you can legally start full-time work, training, further education or any other "post-16" option. You may decide to return to school in September or leave school and not return.

Before the end of compulsory schooling you are only able to work in certain situations for limited amounts of time. If you are 13 you can only work in certain permitted types of work; at 14 you can work in those areas and others that are not prohibited; at 15 you can work for longer hours on Saturdays and school holidays. In all cases you and your employer must obtain an Employment Permit.
