my guess Mr YT is that there are still people taking bungs even after all the recent Blatter situation.....just a new generation of corrupt fookers....wish I could get on that panel.....they could hold it in Syria if the price was right for reevyboy!! hth
Blatter is practically still in charge isn't he? Things are never going to change until he's gone for good.
Much better for England, should we qualify. Our players are always ****** come the summer. In November we'll have an England squad that's in the best shape its ever. If we've got any decent laikers in 2022 that is.
An alternative view Is that IF there isn't/wasn't any corruption/bribes (which is an issue in itself) involved, why shouldn't a team in a hot part of the world host the World Cup? And those countries are too hot in our summer, so they'd always have to be in our winter realistically. I actually think it might be a good thing because the World Cup is the pinnacle of football and should over-ride any club games. Top clubs rule the world pretty much now, so for this decision to stand is good as it's one in the eye for those clubs. Ultimately the issue here is whether Qatar should have got the World Cup. If they rightly did, it had to be a winter tournament. That does raise the question of why their bid was for a summer World Cup I admit, but common sense said it would have to be in winter. But in my opinion it's good to see the arrogant European clubs not get their own way.
Re: An alternative view Well I think it should be taken off them based purely on the rationale that they won a bid for a summer world cup by stating that they would be able to put air conditioning in or whatever to make sure sure they could cope with being in the summer. And now they say they can't. So, even putting the obvious bribe issue to one side, they won it under false pretences. If they had gone through the bidding process saying "we can provide a great world cup but you'll have to move it to winter", do you think they would have won it?
Re: An alternative view if Qatar had been straight all along and bid as a winter World Cup it would be right for it to go ahead. Like Jay I think it will benefit the England team (if we qualify) and it is good to think of the European clubs being shown its not all about them. But they bid for a summer World Cup so should stage one then or not at all. This puts to one side the human rights abuses and human costs of stadium construction.
Re: An alternative view Spot on. The bid was for a summer world cup and all those nations' that bid and failed for the same world cup should be looking to either take legal action or force a re-bid. I hope every single nation resists this change and tells FIFA to stick this world cup. Perhaps a mass withdrawal from the competition would be the best course of action.
Re: An alternative view It's a very good point. Personally, I'm not against the World Cup going to places like Qatar. One of the remits of FIFA is to take football to new territories and promote the sport to as many people as possible. Holding a World Cup in the Middle East will certainly do that. I don't want to cast aspersions about bribery either. It seems to me that all nations have offered bribes in some form or another. If one nation has beaten another by offering a larger bribe then tough **** I'm afraid. They all played the game. But if QATAR were going to hold the competition in Winter they should have put forward their bid stating that. Again, I don't see anything wrong with that, I think it would be good held at that time of year, but you can't say you're going to play it in the summer during the bid then move it to winter after winning. There should be another vote. QATAR can enter again but this time with a bid that tells us exactly when the competition will be played.
Re: An alternative view I don't think any country should be even considered until they've actually qualified for a World Cup or two on their own merit.
Re: An alternative view Apart from the bribe issues, this state has not taken in one refugee from Syria/Iraq, exports terrorism, has an alcohol ban, and a strict dress code. Hardly a friendly place to hold a world competition
