Imho opinion VI (or 6 as i like to call him) has got to be the most astute sub maker as a manager we've ever had. Not saying he's the best manager we've had (although watch this space) but his tactical decisions are unbelievable. Either lots...... at the right time...... brave ....... unexpected ....... early. What do you think ..... ???? Different times yes I get that with different amounts of subs etc but even back int day when you could only have 1 or 2 sometimes they werent even used. Thoughts
Definitely. I like how he actually makes a change when it’s needed and not afraid to do it at HT. so often in past it’s been glaringly obvious a change has been needed and our managers have waited far too long to make them
I posted earlier that it shows how well he knows his players. He often makes substitutions that many of us on here would never make and (so far) it works every single time.
Without doubt VI is the most tactically astute coach we've ever had. Other's have achieved more, sure. DW got us promoted to the PL, NH got us promoted to the 2nd Tier, and did DS. But VI wins games with his mind and tactics. He makes subs at HT, to counter-act what the opposition are doing. The opposition don't respond, or don't know how to respond. This guy is fantastic and I love him.
Yes. There's no doubt that five subs helps our system but let's not forget the opposition also get five too. What's so impressive is that he never takes a step back with them. Halme for Palmer yesterday was a match winner.
Because he uses them so readily players don't seem to get the hump when they're subbed or don't start.
It's unbelievable that we never really change our system or style of play, and we regularly make the same subs, but we are able to change the game so much. I actually used to give Struber praise last season for something similar. Post lockdown, he was regularly bringing Schmidt, Thomas, Chaplin and Ludewig into the game, and a combination of them would have an immediate impact. Whilst I agree Val's subs are incredibly effective, I think the amount of strength in depth we have now is also a factor.
The half time subs were bang on the money. I was thinking (as we neared the 60 minute mark) please dont take morris off val, hes too important to this game (his hold up etc). All his subs yesterday were ace as they usually are...well done big val, very astute. Best ever?....cant remember anyone better but i struggle to remember everyone since around 76!
I think he genuinely sees the game as a squad not team. His subs have in the vast majority been positive, even when winning and later in games. Becky used to frustrate the hell out of me waiting and waiting to make a sub when it was obvious we needed to effect or protect a game. Often subs have been made too late to make an impact or to change the momentum. The most impressive thing for me is how well everyone knows their job as individuals and as a unit. I find that amazing as it only takes one player not to fit and it doesn’t work. Maybe why it appears that he has no patience for players who don’t buy in.
Certainly the energy we play with means the 5 sub rule plays into our hands. And I do have a slight concern that post Covid we’ll see tired legs that we have to keep in the pitch. However, the real strength here is his whole coaching. Not only being able to game winning make tactical changes, but the fact that every player knows they’re part of the team and they know what they’re expected to do if called upon. We had a spell early in the year where we regularly subbed our skipper, which he seemingly took with good grace, for the good of the team. When you see the rotation of the forwards, the touch line attitude appears to be ‘you go finish this off’ rather than a sullen reaction to being subbed. This is the key to the success of this squad, they are one of the best organised units I’ve ever watched. It might not be pretty football, but it has its own beauty in its organisation and work rate.
Totally agree with this, you’ve got Chaplin tweeting about yesterday’s game when he wasn’t even brought off the subs’ bench, you’d not have a lot of players doing this as they’re more than likely to be sulking... Chaplin - Dike - Frieser on Wednesday for squad rotation purposes again...
I was out cycling yesterday morning and was overtaken by a car with the reg number starting with V1..... Spooky.
Chaplin has been class on social media, win or lose ( or occasionally draw!) Personally think he must be great at keeping the team spirit going.
One of the biggest criticisms of Sven-Goran Eriksson as England manager, was that he didn’t appear to have the flexibility of thought to make changes that might positively impact the game. We’ve certainly had a few like that in my time supporting our club. Whether VI is an exceptional thinker, or simply has a Plan A that he is able to reinforce or refresh when needed, because he has squad depth, is certainly debatable. However, I do think he deserves an enormous amount of credit for imposing his ideas incredibly quickly upon a young, relatively inexperienced set of players. He appears to be a gifted leader and, regardless of method, certainly one of life’s winners.
He is very good. Often changes the game and gains us points. Be interesting to see if he is still as good when back to normal amounts of subs.
If the players buy into his Ideas and find it an exciting way to play, they can't do anything else but want to be involved in some way. They are now a Team whether they are in the matchday squad or not, all pulling for each other. Something else big Val must get credit for!
Val is very proactive rather than reactive. He isnt predictable either. He is also fearless with his changes. We have definitely benefited from the 5 sub rule. He knows his squad strength and how to use it. His fringe players have been loaned out. When all are fit we have a strong squad but not the largest. Also been fortunate with injuries and suspensions this season. Kitching is close to a return which only leaves Ben Williams as long term injured.
