I've been out walking for miles again with my dog Ringo, we ended up in Silverwood again. What are all those old buildings in the woods near the railway line, they're in a remote place and i can't figure out what they were. There also looks to be an old toilet block in the woods too, not close to anything. Can't find owt out on google about em.
Not sure exactly where you mean, but on the south side of the line there used to be a nature reserve with a pond where there was fishing at one time. Not been there for years so don't know what the latest state of things is. Maybe the old buildings were something to do with the nature reserve? You can see the pond and one or two buildings on this map http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?...&st=2&pc=s75+3hz&mapp=map.srf&searchp=ids.srf Edit: You have to scroll around and zoom out one level on that link to see the pond, didn't work like I thought it would.
Is there still a scout camp site in Silverwood? There used to be a railway spur off to the old mines there from Dodworth.
the old toilet block is Mad Jacks house !! some mad old boy named jack used to live there back in the day
One of the ruins is near one of the crossings over the railway line. That building has doorways, archers, and windows. It's nothing to do with the scoutcamp.
The red brick building? It was an old miner, who used to fish in the private nearby pond, that told me it was an air shaft for the various local pits. As I said before, I could be wrong as I have no idea whether he was telling the truth or not.
I know where you mean But sorry I've no idea what the buildings were used for. As others have said there was a colliery around there somewhere yonks ago. As you say the scout camp is in a totally different place.
RE: The red brick building? Looks more like a small railway station or something link to the railway. This is the area it's in: http://www.multimap.com/s/R4SebErR Just into the tree line next to the railway
Water tank and/or substation for the railway in its steam/electric days - Me mam & dads old neighbour was a signalman on that line.
