Can you name the 5 footballers who have won sports personality of the year? I'll give you a clue, neither Wayne Rooney nor Gary Neville have been within country mile.
Google tastic 3 were won after stirling performances for their country in world cups tournaments, moore 1966 winning captain, gascoigne 1990 unlucky semi finalists, owen in 1998. I can't remember Rooney winning one after his performances in the last one!
maybe becuase rooneys never been fit in one of them becuase he actually tries to win things for is club. and its a joke award.
He was fit in 2006 when he got sent off - Rooney is a great player but hasn't got the temprement to be a world class player
You've got to admit it's a significant achievement for a footballer to win it? 5 footballers in 57 years Or are you saying awarding it to Ryan giggs was a joke?
So your message to the bbs masses is.... Don't bother voting in the sports personality of the year awards, cos it's a joke.
And your message to the the great sports men and women of this country is... The fact that millions of people voted for you to honour your significant contribution to your respective sports, means nowt, nada, zilch, diddly squat, cos the vote was a joke.
When bobby Moore won it in 1966 it wasn't because he was well liked sept - dec It was because he led his country to victory in the final of the world cup. When Steve Redgrave won it in 2000, it was because he'd won his 5th Olympic gold medal, Not because a few grannies had taken a liking to his tight pecs. When torville and Dean won it in 1984 it was because they had magnificently won olympic gold with their brilliant interpretation of ravels bolero, not because people thought chris looked cute in purple and mauve. I could go on, but at this point you'll either get my point or blatantly ignore it
Its not just won based on world cups or tournament football HT. And how can you say its a joke award when its voted for by the public and is regarded as a very prestigious accolade by sportsmen and women. Seriously would you consider it a joke awarded if Rooney ever did win it?
Think you're all missing the point. It is called Sports Personality not Achievement. If you look at past winners how many would you say were personalities when they won the award for me there is only 3: Gazza, Flintoff & Daley Thompson. If you want achievement then yes most of the winners were worthy of the award but they are all mainstream sports ok Phil taylor was at least recognised last year but what about some of the lesser sports Ben Ainslie (sailing) Mike Russel (billiards) Sarah Stevenson(Tae Kwan Do) to name a few.
