Out of my own interest really. 1) do you use base layer clothing? And do you find it helps. I have just played for the first time with a base layer top on and noticed a massive difference in movement and breathing! I'll tell you tommorow If i ache as much as normal! 2) vapour rub? Anyone still use this I remember once almost everyone using it but now it seems just me i swere by it. 3) boots I have some basic black ones I have had for years and really fancy some new ones but every boot I have tried on seems to have no protection for my muscles in my foot? What do you were and any recommendations?
At 62 I don't play football any more but I did play the odd Sunday league game well into my late 50s. Ever since I use to run with Barnsley RR and Barnsley AC in the 80s I have worn some form of base layer. Originally it was Helly Hanson kit I wore in winter for Cross County racing or when it was chilly. They were marketed as thermals in those Days. I also wore them for football and they are perfect for getting sweat away from the body and keeping you warm. I now wear Craghopper, Bergaus and Rab base layers for Hill and Mountain walking. Depending on the weather I use long or short sleeved layers. In summer you can use them as a single top layer. They are quick drying which helps keep you warm on the Hill or Mountain. For me base layers are an essential piece of kit .
I never wear a base layer, I just wear gloves when it's cold. I find they make a big difference where you're pushing/wrestling other players. New boots are all lightweight. I quite like them because they're really molded to your foot. Not nice when you get caught by some studs but it doesn't happen too often, and I play against Moss Side's finest. I wear Nike Mercurial Vapor.
when I played rugby I used to eat a lump of vic vapour rub, probably not recommended but certainly helped
When I played the only Base Layer you had was your skiddies Linament was applied to make your legs shiny (I think this was to scare the opponents but I'm not sure ?) Boots should be Black, Black or Black (stripes or otherwise are allowed ).
