Officially , no . No football club can stop a player from representing their country . "Officially" is the key word .
I don't think so. Man Utd's lawyers were there yesterday so all the legal aspects have, no doubt, been looked into. I just hope that Rooney is fit enough and doesn't exacerbate the injury which could lead to him being out much longer. I'm sure Man Utd were just being overly cautious in not wanting him to go and that the England management team would not want to risk further injury.
Hopefully, he won't get injured whilst playing for England though The FA will almost certainly have to foot the bill if Rooney gets injured whilst playing for England. Arguably, it would be worth the risk. However, they might also face legal action if they go against the advice of Ferguson and the Manure Doctors. That could get a bit nasty.
As the club that pays his massive salary and expects a return ... I would have thought that they are allowed a substantial say in what he ultimately does.
Nobody for example would want to pay oodles of cash for a player who is then seen to go out and do things that endanger his fitness, whatever those activities might be.

RE: Yes. So you'd be happy for Mcphail, for example, to have an injury yet be playing for Ireland in exactly the same way as you want Rooney to be playing for England. I've not heard any criticism yet from Fergie - just the club statement from Man Utd.
I reckon Rooney would've slapped in a transfer request if they said no. Its up to the player after all.
Clubs dont moan when a player performs well in a Tournament, and his value goes through the roof.
Playing for your country should be the pinnacle for a player, and not just chasing the biggest paycheck!

If the FA have to foot the bill , then they should have the right to play him when they like. Clubs can't have it both ways.
Not saying it shouldn't just that I can see where Man Utd are coming from and every club would be the same. Hope he's ok. Charleroi have a test case about a player being injured on international duty? http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/internationals/4659968.stm
RE: If the FA have to foot the bill , then they should have the right to play him when they like. Currently they don't have to foot the bill though - see my other posting
Don't talk ******* stupid. He's no longer injured, I'm English and (unlike you) I don't give a **** about Man Utd.
