Don't know whether I've led a sheltered life or what, but where does the term 'dingles' come from? and does anyone find it remotely offensive?
RE: Emmerdale and absolutely not-it's not even based on Barnsley nt well that just sums them up (clown) I'd thought it could be from Emmerdale but couldn't work out any link between people from Barnsley and the family of Emmerdale.

West Brom call Wolves fans Dingles, its supposed to be derogatory to where the fans come from, although it has no base. now Dee Dar, at least that has reason behind it, and not a random concoction such as Dingle. fecking pigs
the only link was Stan Richards RIP was from Barnsley just to clarify for any Pigs snouting around
Thanks to the popular Yorkshire TV soap opera of the same name, the fictional "Emmerdale" (formerly "Emmerdale Farm") is perhaps nowadays one of the most famous "places" in the whole of the Yorkshire Dales - even though it doesn't really exist (!)
At present the TV show is filmed on a purpose built set on the Harewood House estate near Harrogate, though title sequences for very early episodes of the soap (when it was called "Emmerdale Farm") were filmed up at Arncliffe in Littondale, (from where it is believed the series derived its title - "Amerdale" being the ancient norse name for Littondale).
For a long period the village of Esholt (near Bradford in West Yorkshire's Bronte Country - not actually even part of the real Yorkshire Dales area) - was used as the fictional village of Beckindale (where most of the action in the series is set).

references Demography
People from Sheffield are called Sheffielders. They are also colloquially known to people in the surrounding towns of Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Chesterfield as "dee-dars" (which derives from their pronunciation of the "th" in the dialectal words "thee" and "thou".
[23] Alexander, Don (2001). It's nothing to do with it being based in Barnsley It's just a derogatory word for a bunch of inbred yokels that they like to think we are.
The Wendies call us Dingles because they want us to be perceived as thick. Don't think Emmerdale Farm is the most difficult thing to get your head around, though.
It's not even original West Brom/ Wolves Burnley/ Blackburn But if it gives them a laugh .... (blagger)
A bird at work is from Dronfield and her surname is Dingle. Cant do with Pigs, all stupid thick in their head inbred cocky cnuts.
But I thought that the Dingles wer witten in to Emmerdale as moved there from Barnsley Imay be wrong..often am
They're from Lancashire Every single one of 'em has a Lancashire accent. Marlon & Caine have even got season tickets for Man Ure. ALl the actors/actresses were born in Lancashire apart from those who married into the Dingle family.
There's only one South Yorkshire Dingle and that's Elvis Dingle played by Bobby Knutt. Who does Knutt support? The blades.
Zac is from Burnley, years ago the PNE and Blackburn fans started calling their fans Dingles, Sheff w picked up on it, so its not even originaal, *******
