There IS recovery software out there somewhere, but where god only knows.

Apparently, even after formatting a hard drive, data isn't completely gone - until it is written over with new content. I've heard the software is quite expensive though.

    Maybe, maybe not.

As ND says, formatting a drive does not erase it as such.

A drive consists of many data sectors and a table which works as a map of the drive, recording which parts of which files are in each sector. Formatting the dirve resets the table but leaves the 1's and 0's on the drive, until new data is saved on the drive. If the data is intact, the table can be at least partially reconstructed.

This sort of thing is the software ND was talking about

    Depends on the format

If he's just done a standard Windows/DOS format then there's every chance that you can get all the data back assuming he/you've not used the PC or written some files since the format. Use something like EZ Recovery Pro to get back all the data - I've done it for other people many times, even on RAID drives.

If he's shredded his data or used a low level format then you're in for a hard time.
