I have an inlaw (not outlaw) in the local police force
When he came to join the local force
They described the local towns
This is one of the things they said about Barnsley........
Barnsley has the LEAST ethnic mix of any town of relative size in England
These are only a very few Black or Asian people living in Barnsley

So if there aint any (or very few) living here.......how can we be segregated ???

Racial segregation..

It's always mistified me as to why Barnsley gets a racist tag.

There are very good reasons why there was not a large black or Asian migration to this area.

Our dominant industry was mining and there was never a shortage of bodies to go down into that hell hole. In contrast, the Asians in the 1960's came to work in the Wollen Mills where there were labour shortages. Hence, the large Asian populations in Huddersfield, Bradford, Dewsbury, etc. They also worked in the Steel Industry in Rotherham and Sheffield. The West Indians in the 1950's came to work on the buses again Barnsley had no shortage of people to work on the buses.

Few West Indians worked in the mines and I don't recall any Asians doing so. So IMHO the Mining Industry was the reason why so few imigrants came to live in the area, nothing to do with racism.

0.9% of Barnsley's population are ethnic.
not sure if this is right or not but apparantley 98% of the people living in Bradford come from an ethnic origin.

Well put mate.

Don't know how someone from sheffield has the nerve to talk about outlying towns in such a way.

Who does he think has payed for the redevelopment of sheff?......the students? no, its the people of SY that have payed and the people from SY should be credited for it, especially considering the hard times that we had to endure in the 80's and 90's.

there isn't ONE place in Barnsley that has an ethnic group living in it.........For example

Athersley South is not full of people from a Pakistani background
Nither is anywhere else in Barnsley
So why somebody should say we are segregated into ethnic groups is beyond me
Sheffield, Rotherham, Huddersfield etc etc are - but not us

sorry i thought i was right in saying 98% of the Bradford population was ethnic. Maybe your figure of 18.9% looks more accurate? Ye, we'll go for that one.

There is another thing what Barnsley hasn't got that most towns of a similar size have got

A red light district.....
Or does one follow the other
Ask in Donny - and they will tell you they do

But like this lass said to me a couple of years ago.......
"There int a red light district in Barnsley cos on Friday and Saturday neets lasses int TARN are giving it away !!!!"

We do have a polish community

Hard workers, just like our grand and great grandparents.

If England is anything like Norway, most of the 'ethnic community' are lazy none working wasters! Mind you, they do seem to have the best in everything! How the hell do they manage that?

So you are telling me that under 10%

of people in England are non-white'?

Where did you get that from?

RE: Rotherham?

The 4% of Asians in Rotherham live in either St Anns or Wellgate, there is no such area in Barnsley with such a concentration of non-white ethnic concentration.

I've lived on Wellgate and I have to say that my Asian neighbours were fantastic, a real sense of community and a willingness to help anyone, irrespective of race, who were willing to contribute to that society in any way.

Overall I agree with you. However Pogmoor has a relatively large (for Barnsley) population of Asians and the street opposite BDGH is mainly Asian families, medical staff and all that.

I've never been through Jump without seeing at least one black person.

I believe that living in a town without large ethnic mix adds to social cohesion and really does feel safer, for white people anyway.

However barnsley fowk are extremely predjudiced against anyone from outside t'Tarn
