Ffs. Watching Barnsley iFollow to hear that Shef Wednesday are a massive team and every year Barnsley stay in the Championship is a bonus.
I didn't have that pleasure tonight because I watched it on Sky but I agree that it's outrageous that our own iFollow commentator gets pushed out sometimes in favour of one from Sheffield. I don't know the reasons behind that but it must be some contractual rubbish. I went downstairs to my kitchen at half time to get something to eat and had their coverage on my phone, hoping to hear some interesting summary comments from Mark Crossley while I cooked a nice omelette. However, after about a minute of summing up how the Reds had shot themselves in the foot with the late second goal it soon switched to the station's moronic trailer with that idiot Foster burbling on about.....well, I've no idea, and the annoying voice of the middle of the day female presenter telling me about where to find their Privacy Notice (like I CARE ). They all sound SOOOO jolly, it's sick-making listening to them sometimes.
I didn't pay my season ticket money to hear about the dee-dars. What has happened to Matt Bailey? Bring him back!
I don't know if Matt has a day job etc. but I assumed today he couldn't make it due to the early kick-off. Based on literally nothing and I could be totally off, but that's the reasoning I came up with that seemed like it made sense. Mark Crossley really has it in for Victor and it's annoying to listen to tbh. Plus he's pretty useless imo.
I thought it was very good overall, and only one reference to the masives (not just Wednesday) at the bottom of the league IIRC. Missed Matt though.
The club doesn't pay him to be a full-time commentator? It's an outrage I tell thi You are probably right
Crossly was awful tonight, being told every year we stay in the championship is a bonus was a particular low point. Bad enough loosing without listening to that Shiite
The sheffield commentory is just chatter chatter chatter.... the match is secondary and an interuption when there is goalmouth action .... and then back to the chatter...
Well he says that Victor has a poor touch. Anybody having seen Victor play could tell you that. However is it the case that no matter how you work on it, that par of his game won't improve. Can anybody name a player that has gone from have a touch like a carthorse to one like Messi purely by " working on it"? Can't recall one myself..
Yep - chatter about the dee-dars. "Also on BBC Radio Sheffold this weekend, we're at Bramu Layne for Yoonited against Leicester, and tomorrow we're down at Norridge as Wensdeh... oh, and Bournemouth have scored again."
I was in the car when the game kicked off. There was an incident in the game where Walton came charging out of his area and made a mistake. From the commentary I honestly didn’t know for a good two minutes whether Bournemouth had scored or not. Giddings also has a terrible habit of just sensationalising someone’s name by shouting it when they could score. e.g. “ ball across the box by Brittain comes to MOWATT ......” then a pause where you have no idea whether it’s a goal, or if it’s gone over the bar. Happens several times a game.
My other pet hate re radio commentary is “Barnsley are playing from left to right.” Utterly meaningless unless you know where the commentary box is. I challenged Rob Staton about it once and he said that it helps people get a picture of the game. No it doesn’t. What helps is if you say “ Barnsley are kicking towards the Leppings Lane end, where there fans are”
When Radio Sheffield took over for a season a while ago I had a torrid time wondering whether we had scored or not most games. They really do like to leave it dangling. The one positive I will give about last night’s commentary was that for the most part you could tell it was radio commentary, in that the whole time was spent describing the action or giving other colour commentary. I feel that since matches can be bought on iFollow the commentary has changed to be more of a tv style with gaps and sometimes names being given but not much description of the action and long conversations about sometimes random things. I’m fine with that when I can see the match too but it’s very frustrating when I only have audio for away matches and it’s hard to picture what is going on.
I didn't think it was that bad to be honest. I must have missed them talking about Wednesday, other than them saying Bournemouth lost there earlier in the season. I don't think Crossley is great at the co-commentary either, but I presume he's had no training in it whatsoever. His constant criticism of Adeboyejo was annoying (as was him talking as though he'd discovered Callum Styles on Tuesday), but he's entitled to his opinion.
The commentary was passable. No more, no less. I prefer the usual iFollow team. The Sky coverage was poor, though, especially the use of replays. Multiple replays of a something and nothing event, while the game was still progressing elsewhere. I appreciate that squeezing replays into a live game can be a bit of a balancing act, but they got it wrong too often last night in my opinion.
I am in the minority here, and I usually nit pick everything, but I enjoyed it. [if you can enjoy a loss]
I can't wait for Matt Bailey to get back, I really miss his commentary. I think Matt does a brilliant job
I'm really enjoying the Radio Sheffield commentary this aft. Wednesday went 1-0 up and it was all mirth and merriment. Then Norwich scored 2 in a few minutes and my mood improved considerably.
