I went when I was about 15/16 with my parents.

Great day out. Very authentic for what it is. We stopped in a cottage, did 4 nights up there for my mums 50th birthday. Burradon farm I believe it's called.

With the nature of the place weather is an important factor and I think partially with that in mind your entry fee does give you unlimited access for the following 12 months and it is only a 2hr drive.

Went there back in the 80's, very much on the lines of the Black Country museum and the Coalbrookdale museum near Telford. Worth a visit. Not sure about camping nearby, probably some sites on the coast near Seaham.

If you do go, the Masden Grotto pub (on the coast near South Sheilds) is a must.
