Used to have one when I worked at the pit due to receiving concessionary fuel allowance.

don't miss emptying the ashes though !

Wood burners seem to be very popular at the moment

My dad's a coal merchant and very busy, so there are still plenty about. A lot of his customers are people who have replaced their old gas fires with solid fuel burners and open fires.

We've just been to the in-laws for dinner and they have two. A solid fuel stove in the front room that heats the water and central heating and an open fire in the back room. They were both burning when we got there and were marvellous.

Wish we'd got one but unfortunately not. However, in the next couple of years we're going to replace the back boiler behind the gas firs in the front room with a new combi-boiler. We can then rip the gas fire and back boiler out and put in an open fire. Can't wait. I'll just spend all night burning stuff.

We have a couple of multi fuel stoves, We burn both logs and coal, usually get through a couple of tons of logs during the season and about twenty sacks of coal. It takes some beating on a winters evening.

I've had one in the past, not now but I do miss them in winter. Seriously thinking about getting a log / multi fuel burner.

I'd love an open fire....so much better for burning things like rubbish, kitchen waste, bills, forensic evidence etc than a gas fire ;)

If your planning on a new heating system then you might be interested in looking into the GDHIF (green deal home improvement fund), basically it's cashback to the homeowner, it has just gone back live again and it is available to anyone.

Got two open fires one of which one has a back boiler for the hot water and heating......trust me when i say the sooner we get shut of both the better. The ball ache of removing ashes let alone having to relight it every day fetching coal/ coke in, the dust it creates...need i go on....gas been installed after christmas cant come quick enough....the flick of a switch.....heat and hot water bliss
