What's is the best music decade for you.

Now I know this is personnel choice but for me.

    The 80's I love it.

Havn't got one, if i had to pick a ten year period it would be 75-85!...Most of my favourite music came from that era.

I'd have to have two 62-66 mod/soul explosion and 1976-85 punk, new wave and 2 tone.

The early 80's were fantastic but the music turned gash from the mid 80's onwards so I'd have to say the 70's with the early 80's added on.

Good call, there was some fantastic music in all these eras although I think the mod / two tone revival peaked in 82 / 83.

Aye you're right probably ended with the demise of the Jam and the original Specials though I still liked early Style Council and Elvis Costello was churning out some great stuff and the first Big Audio Dynamite album was fantastic but the true quality was definitely 1977-82. Then morphed into some fantastic New Order and The Smiths and mid period Cure.

Every decade has been both brilliant and appalling from the '70s onwards. The difference now is that there are so many different genres of music and so much exposure it just seems like there is more crap around than ever

77 - 82 were so good they will never be surpassed in my opinion. It might be old age but I really feel that people who missed that era really missed a very special few years. Unemployment, social unrest, race riots, they all combined to produce some of the greatest bands ever.

I was hopeful there would be a youth movement driving music forward around the time their were the student riots but music seems so throwaway and kids have little direction been bought off by the glitter of consumer goods.

Amen to that. I know there are still some decent bands these days but I rarely hear a song that resonates in the way that music once did. It may sound like a cliché but they don't make classic, timeless music like they used to.

I think it depends what genres you like. From my point of view there have been some brilliant albums in the past few years. Lots of bands are political or social commentators - it just tends not to be in the mainstream.

I'm probably out of touch, in fact there is no doubt that I am out of touch so I wouldn't question that there are still some good bands making meaningful music but as you point out its very much away from the mainstream. Teenagers are still rebellious but where music is concerned they seem quite happy with manufactured dull three minute pop songs with no edge at all - with the exception of (c)rap.

For me all the best music has been outside of the mainstream and long may that continue.

I couldn't tell you a single song or album that's been number one this year. However, I have bought albums released this year from bands who are very much active. I don't know if that makes me out if touch or only bothered about what interests me.

I agree there gave been some great individual moments across genres recently that have flickered into life but look at a genre like Rap Hip Hop it's roots were in the most political of music influenced by the Black Panthers producing possibly the most political group of all time in Public Enemy now it's all money talk.

The music of protest that me and Mario were taking about was mainstream. Look at the words of Eton Rifles by the Jam or London Calling by the Clash or God Save the Queen that threatened the establishment so much they fiddled the charts to stop it being number one. This is so far from the situation we gave now it's sad. There is sent great music coming out of Greece at the moment real cutting edge stuff but little of any real edge cutting across the mainstream over here.

While it's all well and good having that sort of music at the margins in effect it achieves nothing if you can't broaden it's appeal. Look at someone like Prince releasing Sign O' The Times a majestic political song when he was the worlds biggest pop star. I can't see anyone at the minute taking those sort of risks. Really challenging things.

True but I liked the early '70s as well so if I had to pick a decade it would be the seventies if picking 10 years it would be 73 to 82

I wasn't around at the time so it's difficult for me to judge the impact of a song like Eton Rifles. I wonder if the lyrics did resonate with most people or if it was just a minority and everyone just thought it was a good song?

What sort of music is coming out of Greece by the way?

My favourite band started out at the beginning of the 90's. But if I totted up every band/artist I liked and the years they were active or whatever, it'd probably be the 80's.

    So, 80's is my answer.
