So in another thread a poster said Duff was one of best managers in living memory. Got me thinking so I decided to rate all the managers / coaches I can remember. For me I went with actual achievements (promotions / cup runs etc) as putting you higher in the list. Managers who relegated us immediately put you at the bottom. I also kept in mind which league we were in at the time. This also made me realise I’ve seen some dross over the years. Others may rank differently. So rank yours….

I cant believe Flicker is so high on the list. I wish we would have had/backed Robins for longer. Massive area of what could have been with him in charge.

Flicker had a better ppg than Robins and was given much less to spend.

I know I'm a broken record with this one, but for me Robins was so overrated.

purely for the great escape. United the fans, went bold, kept us up against the odds. Then he went barmy in the summer. Robins did a solid job establishing us in the league.

he was higher purely because he managed us in a higher league but yes he was absolutely dire. Most of my bottom half of the list were shocking

Hugely. Only got to look at what happened afterwards. Football wasn't great, but highest finish that was only then beaten by Ismael & decade later. Shown later too what a great manager he is, too.

Inherited an unbelievable squad of talent, solid foundations & ultimately parachute money. And to use the Duff argument that Play Offs wasn't success, achieved nothing with it...

    Wilson I
    Ismael
    Bassett
    Stendel
    Ritchie
    Duff
    Hecky
    Davey for his cup run

After that we’ve been pretty mediocre since 1990

Surely you have to have been here over one season to even get on the list for Barnsley's best manager.

I think Bassett had a much stronger squad than Duff which is why I had him lower. He had several players who had played in premiership for us. That was a great season though!

Going a little further back I still think Bobby Collins did an outstanding job during one of the toughest eras our club and local area has known. He brought in some quality players too.
