I felt travel sick. Literally. When I arrived at Brooklands hotel on Friday evening and saw the Sunderland players arriving to stay at the same hotel. It wasn't their presence that sickened me, but the press furore that greeted them. It soon cam to light that Tobias, Anthony and Maarton had breached club discipline and had been left behind. My sickness soon faded. Roy handled the situation impeccably. The players mingled with the fans in the hotel and a relaxing time was had by all. Fortunately, my bout of 'travel sickness' didn't extend to the players. Whilst they weren't on peak form, they handled everything on the pitch with grace. One touch, fast flowing football was displayed, and although Barnsley were getting stuck in, we were a class above. The fans were thunderous, they urged the team on, and when Leadbitter burst through we raised the roof. The volume was deafening. The best was yet to come. I have been to Wembley along with 45,000 other Sunderland fans, but I have never heard such a volume as that which greeted Connolly's goal. The fans had been willing him to score, and when he did, the 'Got to give it up' tune, amended to 'David Conn-er-ly, Conn-er-ly, David Conn-er-lyyyy, na na na na na na na' was the loudest I have ever heard. Ok, so many will say Barnsley aren't great opposition, and we only had 2 hours to travel, but the professionalism at SAFC is there for all to be admired and the support belies belief. The Barnsley PA announced our away support as 8100+ (can't remember exactly) and stated that is the biggest in Oakwell's history. That made me very proud. I returned this afternoon, thoroughly knackered, but very satisfied. The excellent Brooklands hotel was a great way to relax and enjoy a footballing weekend which started badly with our players timekeeping, but ended superbly with almost everything going our way. I dont remember that I thought he said 7800 and certainly didnt hear any mention of biggest in history. If that was said its wrong anyway - both the blunts and fowls have brought far more than that
I can't remember hearing it but ........ One of your own fans has posted a thread saying it also, http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/606/A20673560 I don't think the original post is particularly patronising just seen through rose tinted glasses
I am not doubting that it was a great away support but I genuinely cannot remember hearing the announcer saying it was the biggest away following ever. Not sure where this little tale has come from.
how many Everton fans came in the cup that year? 10,000? The Spion kop was heaving. I was squished on Ponty in the 32K crowd.
RE: how many Everton fans came in the cup that year? 10,000? The Spion kop was heaving. 'The Barnsley PA announced our away support as 8100+ (can't remember exactly) and stated that is the biggest in Oakwell's history' That is BS. Yes Everton brought more than that - so did Man City in the early 80s League Cup Tie (34k crowd - brought aroud 10K)....................and there are so many many more examples that I wont waste my time trying to remember. It does however illustrate the delusional qualities of the Sunderland fans....................anyway, SAFC I also remember BFC nearly 20,000 to Anfield early 80s league Cup Tie. Makes your 8,000 look a little paltry dont you think?
He did announce it as 7,800 Never mentioned record crowds - Let them go up and they'll get bouced straight down again!
Reason they got so many tickets Because it was a big game for them....it wasn't for us. I liked their cheers and jibes when the crowd was announced yet we had a bigger total attendance (with a smaller away following) against Wednesday. Why didn't we get a chant of "Small town in Newcastle" going?
this is total b**t bigest crowd at twell i belive they brought 7750 fans which both d dars brought more ,everton ,man untd, man city and a few knob heads in the east stand and i could name a lot more
v Everton, classic announcement over pa there is a special train for Everton fans departing at 17:15, for those of you from Merseyside that's quarter past 5, quality
PMSL Thats never one of our fans - its a wind up merchant or one of your fans impostering (if thats a word)
me neither. definetly announced 7,800 "today's attendance is 18,000 (and something) with 7,800 sunderland supporters. on behalf of everybody connected with barnsley football club we'd like to thank you for your loyal support" or something like that anyway, definetly nothing different to the announcement made during every game.
