We're 16th in the second flight, financially stable, whilst not what you'd class as being rich, with a decent but unspectacular manager and decent but relatively unspectacular players, crowds below the average for our division, in the shadows of our local rivals, managing to pull off the odd cup shock and decent result, whilst also losing games we should win...

Basically we're doing exactly what we did from around 1982 until 1996! Except in those days there weren't the stupid knee jerk reactions we get today. In fact, it is funny that the biggest critics are always the ones who are posting whilst the match is on or just after it has ended. I do think that some people like the sound of their own (cyber) voices.

"If we keep Davey we'll end up in the Conference..." No we won't.

"Odejayi is the worst striker we've ever had..." No he isn't.

"The performance against xyz United was the worst performance ever..." No it wasn't.

For 15 years we were a mid-table team, occasionally flirting with promotion, occasionally flirting with relegation. What is it that has made everybody so impatient nowadays though? Is it that one season in the top flight? Is it because we watch teams like Blackburn/Wigan/Hull/maybe QPR next splash money around and have success? Is it because we have this anonymous forum for people to rant on when they have nothing more constructive to do?

Surely the events after the Premiership season haven't all been lost on you? Surely you're glad, not only to have a football team, but to be where we are now, both in the league and financially, with the security that Patrick Cryne has put in place, and with the memory of last season's Cup run and the fact that we do have a far more decent squad than at any time since the Premiership?

For every Wigan and Blackburn there's a Bradford and Leeds, who gambled and lost.

Football, as in life, is not as easy as just going out and getting what you want. Don't be so ruddy impatient. And I'd also say stop being so rude to Patrick Cryne, who is throwing a lot of money into the club. After paying the likes of Mike Sheron and Eric Tinkler salaries that nearly helped the club disappear, we're not going to make that mistake again.

The club know that we need more ability up front and they are doing their best to get someone in to help with that. But hopfully they're not going to panic and waste more money. It's very easy to rant on here about "we should sign so and so..." just because you notice that he scored two on Saturday against Leyton Orient, etc, but I'd like to hope that a little more thought than that goes into it when we do actually sign players. And if we don't manage to sign someone, then so be it. I think we will though.

But look at the players we have got. Maceo Rigters had a feature on him in Four Four Two at the beginning of last season, picking him out as one to watch for Blackburn. It was so convincing I almost signed him for my Fantasy League team. So when we signed him I thought he'd be a sure fire hit and he hasn't proved to be. Signings just don't always work out is what I am trying to say. Some of the names mentioned here don't carry the reputation that Rigters carried, so who's to say who will make it? Let's leave this to the experts. In the past year or so we've signed more decent players than poor ones. Yes, it is unfortunate that the poor ones seem to be the strikers.

And if Campbell-Ryce goes (and my other thread from a couple of days ago shows that all but one or two players who have left us for more than £500k in the past 20 years has been a failure to some degree for the rest of their careers) and we get a decent price, so be it. It is frustrating when one of our better players leaves, and nobody wants to see JCR go, but they all leave eventually and that's just the nature of the game. I bet Southend fans weren't too thrilled when we took him from them.

So everybody calm down, stop throwing your toys out of the pram and if you don't want to go or won't follow the Reds any more because we've sold a player, lost at Norwich, don't sign Roy of the Rovers or whatever reason, then that's your choice and enjoy Meadowhall on a Saturday afternoon. There's plenty of us who will still be going down.

    Good post.

Sometimes this BBS turns into a competition as to who can be the most outrageous in their views & it becomes pathetic.

    But it's addictive as f.ck.

    What you say

Really looking forward to next Tuesday, like I do every match. I've been doing that for 40 years. It will never change (well it might if some oil baron comes in and turns the club into a money processing plant).

    A lot of truth there

But there are also plenty of us who are simply disappointed at a performance, or wish to suggest signings.

My list of potential strikers I posted up was just a few ideas, I wasn't saying 'we should sign xyz'.

But yes there is a lot of hysteria.

    Not True

The one about £1.5 million being 8 figures was the best post in history on all fans forum websites in all countries on all planets in this universe and all parallel ones.

    Reyt post that Mill Hill

Most of the people on here just haven't got a clue about football. They think that we find a player we want and he just signs the contract and performs like Kaka. At the end of the day, we are a small club fighting with some big boys. Not long ago Southampton and Norwich were in the Premiership and we were in League One and now we are very disappointed to lose to them, that shows just how far we've come. If you want instant success join the Man City bandwagon.
