SKY OVERKILL TOO MANY BARNSLEY PEOPLE SUPPORT MAN U / BLUNTS ETC COST RUPERT MURDOCH SHOPPING ? OTHER REASONS?
RE: Reasons why lower crowds at Oakwell...........a few reasons 1) the people of Barnsley are not yet convinced about the state of Barnsley football club. They (or some do) see the club as cheap and trying to get through the championship without bringing any bums on seats players in We missed a golden opportunity in the close season to keep the Cardiff feel good factor going 2) Barnsley people haven't got much money to spend. Many offices and factories in the area are paying minimum wage to £10 an hour. This is much lower than the national average 3) we have lost 1000s of fans in recent year through getting relegated and its going take take a prolonged period of success to get those fans back
RE: Reasons why lower crowds at Oakwell...........a few reasons Point 1 - garbage Point 2 - assumptions probably spot on Point 3 - correct, people have got out of the habit of going to Oakwell But, the entertainment on offer at Oakwell is fantastic - I haven't seen football this good for many a year. It doesn't matter if the names on show are not household, what matters is the quality and effort and that is high. Unfortunately, many so called fnas are not after entertainment they just want success.
Crowds have nearly trebled since I started watching in '84 You have got to build a base to start from.

Lower than when? Increased on last season and we are getting more than the equivalent stage in 1996-97
the miners strike caused a massive fall in attendances most of whom must have forgot where oakwell is because a lot never came back to the fold,,not on regular basis,,just the biggies
RE: When we were in this division before weren't crowds circa Depends which year you are talking about.
Excellent crowds the first season back under Norman Hunter,
Decimated by miners strike and never really recovered until promotion season. Upon relegation I think the crowds were around 13000 rather than 15000 but doubtless someone can dig out the figures

ive just had a look at google to see if i could find our average attendance over the last 20 years couldnt find owt apart from emmerdales cain dingle in a barnsley fan
I think you'll find we had decent crowds the season after we relegated , because....... everybody renewed their prem season tickets so that they would have first shot at them if we got promoted again.
Plus, there was the Judas factor.
All summer we got "I'll never go anywhere else" then the day after the season ticket renewal date he bogies off to swillsbro

RE: the miners strike caused a massive fall in attendances I think one of the reasons they didn't come back is because the club didn't do anything to help the strikers e.g. discounted tickets etc. Plus, once you stop going you soon find other things to do
Last fifteen years average attendances 06/07 - 11284
05/06 - 9045
04/05 - 9779
03/04 - 9620
02/03 - 9758
01/02 - 13323
00/01 - 14465
99/00 - 15412
98/99 - 16269
97/98 - 18443
96/97 - 11407
95/96 - 8118
94/95 - 6526
93/94 - 7596
92/93 - 6417.
