...from a gaggle of Northern Irish Manchester United fans. They were gracious in defeat, said we absolutely deserved to be in the semis and hoped we'd see them back at Wembley for the Community Shield in August. Wore my reds hat, scarf and t-shirt loud and proud all the way back to Glasgow. The best bit was travelling to the airport on the train, changing at Sheffield and having a good walk round Sheffield station ensuring every single potential Wednesdayite or Blade got a good look! The train conductor on the airport train said, if I hadn't already had a ticket he wouldn't have charged me! The whole nation is behind us, we're the battling underdogs lets go on and win it!
Same here, Cazi Even though I'm not actually from Barnsley! Still, the way people have warmed to us once again is amazing. Great times.
except its a little patronising isnt it people offering free things because you're from barnsley and calling you the little underdogs. even now people are saying we're the small team which I don't understand, we kicked west broms arses earlier in the season and cardiff are only two points better off than us.
RE: except its a little patronising isnt it Not patronising at all, just people actually wanting us to do well, whats wrong with that?
Trust me they weren't being patronising... ...it's called wishing us well and congratulating all connected with Barnsley football club. The lads at the airport were Manchester United season ticket holders who travel to every home game from Belfast. They were gracious in defeat, were not crowing about the referee like Fergie and offered Barnsley the best of luck for the semi and the final! The train conductor was a Stockport County fan and again was saying how good it was for the FA Cup that lower division teams can get a result against the so called big boys. Just enjoy being centre of attention, I know I am.
RE: Trust me they weren't being patronising... Everyone at work, including folk that don't follow football much are calling in/ringing up to say well done and they hope we win it. People seem genuinely pleased that a 'smaller' club, be it us or whoever will win the FA Cup this year. It's difficult to appreciate at the minute because I still can't quite believe it happened.
That's right fella... ...as I've walked into work this morning I received a round of applause and a shake of the hand from Glaswegians who normally don't pay much attention to lowly Barnsley, aside from the usual disbelief that I travel half the length of the country to watch games. That was even before I got to my desk and I have just about finished answering all the congratulatory e-mail messages from colleagues all over the country, and the world including Chelsea fans!
It's glorious - never had folk down here wish us well I have got Ipshit fans, Narwich fans, Brizzle City, Cambridge United fans all wishing us well. My best mate, a Narwich fan, sat with me all though the game and we got mullered on Saturday night but he was cheering and shouting and we were all hugging (yep it's been a year!) at the end of the game. I am off to Palarse on Saturday with 5 Palarse fans and my mate from Saturday who is a adopted Barnsley fan for the day and all have sent us best wishes, one even admitted to having a tear in his eye...he recently became a father so I blame the whole emotional experience of that. Just revel in the glory and take the attention, not many folk are really patronising.
RE: That's right fella... Genuine football fans, and by that I exclude the ones that follow football via SKY, but folk that go to matches and actually feel for their team, whoever that may be and whatever level, know what days like Saturday mean to other fans.
