What scares me about ‪#‎benefitsstreet‬ is how easily people can be told to hate , it shows Hitler could still have come to power today'

What an absolute load of b0llocks that programme is. Easiest thing in the world to target the people at the bottom of the pile. The benefits these people claim, pales into absolute insignificance when compared with the distribution of wealth at the top of the tree, tax avoidance schemes, unclaimed benefits etc etc.

    Irrelevant.

Just because someone is exploiting every tax loophole there is, it doesn't make it any less of a crime to beg and steal your way through life.

P.S I am not talking about everyone and anyone who is unemployed in this country. I am speaking only of the bottom feeders featured in this particular programme.

When is the programme on about the tax exploiters and avoiders ? Or the one about the landlords of ex-council houses been renting them back to the council because the council do not have enough properties to house the people?
If we have Beneifits Street we should also have Rich and Scavenging Avenue !!

I agree Mark but are we going to defend every ill in society by saying "what about the tax dodgers/bankers etc?" As I said above, one does not excuse the other.

No but the ones getting the flack every week , cost us less than 1 /25th of the cost of Tax avoidance and evasion, yet they are the ones that get the grief!!
It should be measured equally, but it will not because the rich are feeding public with the something for nothing ballax !!

I know, just the rich can do it on a far greater scale. I dislike ANYONE that fails to pay their dues, that goes for the cash in hand garages and the multi millionaires.

The rich do it on a greater scale cos they've more cash to fiddle...

That's all. Hmrc are outsourcing 100s of millions a year to debt collectors as they are struggling to get folk to pay up.

Some of it's down to hmrc like cos 90% of the time they are all just piss and wind. They are more customer service now than the nasty taxmen who they were a few years ago.

Customer service and the taxman ... really ? Premium rate numbers, queuing system to get through to someone who doesn't have a great deal of training. I have access to an agents line which is slightly better, however on occasions they have given incorrect answers.

Debt chasing ? Outsource it and don't give the agents adequate information. I have a client who fell foul of the vat registration rules didn't register on time when going through the threshold. This client immediately agreed to the mistake and I registered them. Unfortunately there was an £11k vat bill to be paid. This was negotiated and a settlement agreed at £8k to be paid from savings and £1k per month. Two weeks later they found a hand written note pushed through her shop door from an agent threatening legal action and a mobile phone number. The client was very shaken to say the least, if the shop had been open then customers would have witnessed the debt collectors visit.

I telephoned the agent, he was very belligerent to start off saying how there was £11k of tax outstanding and what he was going to do to collect it. It became clear very early that this chap knew very little about the case. I pointed out that that the collections department had agreed a settlement two weeks earlier and the actual balance was £3k at that time. His attitude changed a said that the most recent information he had was over two weeks old. He said that as he was an agent he didn't have real time information and that he often was sent to chase debts that had either been settled or were just incorrect. He told me to submit a formal complaint as it might also help him.

Formal complaint sent, strongly worded, mealy mouthed 'we're very sorry but really we don't give a ****' letter reply.

I have no problem with collectors chasing debts but I'm afraid that the above isn't an isolated incident. I wonder if they were so diligent in chasing Vodaphone's £6bn.

Anyone see the BBC programme about Gas/Electricity meter cheats on Monday.

People bypassing or 'fixing' their meters - one house they did this was in a multi-million pound road in Surrey. Unbelievable.

"some people, brimming with unfocused rage, see it as a televised "scum zoo" full of pariahs for them to fling peanuts and hashtags at."

"British society seems to require a regularly-updated register of sanctioned hate figures, about whom it's OK to say more or less anything; people who form a vital pressure valve for this terrifying pent-up societal wrath, lurking beneath the surface like magma under Yellowstone."

THE programme is targeting people without explaining the reasons why they were on benefits in the first place we in barnsley never experienced the amount of deprivation and hopelessness that we are experiencing now, wonder why that is, is it because our industrys have gone that paid a fairly decent wage ?
imo that is exactly what has happened, the tory gov'y were happy to let the benefits billrise whilst they were feeding their benefactors our resources.
just what is happening well imo its this the rich are under pressure to explain why they are getting fatter in a recession utilitybills going up, petrol going up, food prices going up everything fekin going up without a justifiuable reason we are told its costs but wages are not going up to legitimise this cxlaim.
yes these people are reliant on benefits and have a lower sense of worth because the very people that are now demonising them sowed the seeds a generation ago.
so they use everthing in their power to mobilise this hate towards them so no one questions the bankers etc to feed the ill informed and give them a scapegoat as a diversion from whats really happening because after all the mob must have blood.
and as you say history has a big part to play and the powerfull use it to their advantage and their thinking would be why not it'll be thirty years before the real infomation comes out.

Classic play from the control the masses playbook, as in Orwell's 1984 - Two Minutes Hate. After all he who pays the piper gets to call the tune, i.e. the banksters and corporate welfare junkies.
