Any recommendations please? I don't have Sky, and I don't want a recordable DVD only.

    Cheers.

Nothing seems to do the full works

I would ideally like a HDD/DVD recorder with a Freeview tuner.
If that's not important to you I would look at
    http://www.pantheronline.co.uk/shop...=DVR-9000H&ref=pricerunner&epi=331037
Also available over the counter at Maplin for £199.99

However, if you have a hard disc recorder, the only advantage of DVD is to record things for other people. So you might be inclined to say cobblers to 'em, since a hard drive Freeview recorder can be bought in Aldi for £99.

To buy a freeview DVD+HDD machine, you have to go Sony or Panasonic and prices jump to £400!  Not too bad you might say but it's getting into the realms of building a budget PC with Freeview card, HDD, DVD burner etc.  Add a wireless desktop and you have a recorder that does everything and can be connected to the web for surfing in the living room etc as well.

    It does indeed

But as I said in the last paragraph only Sony and Panasonic seem to do them and by that price you could chuck together an mATX Sempron-based PC with remote control freeview card, big hard disk, DVDR drive and a wireless desktop. Which will do all the above and surf the web, play DivX etc etc.  But will not be as tidy looking, nor be quite as slick as a proper purpose-built machine like that.

    Choices, choices...

If I chucked all that together ...

... it just wouldn't work mate. I just spent 2 days trying to get a wireless network up and running. Take your point though. Not sure what to do now. Except avoid Philips DVD recorders, once bitten etc ....

I think unless you're as big a nerd as me the Sony would be better than a PC - things like fan noise and power consumption of a PC would be a bind.
Unless it was a PC based machine in a silent and stylish set-top housing:

It's all too difficult for my puny brain [IMG].

Surely it's only a matter of time until the sub-£250 cheapo brand freeview+HDD+DVD is upon us?

He could always buy a chipped xbox for 50 quid and network it to a PC. The ultimate multimedia machine which is runnming in our living room and it's fantastic.

I'd buy a HUMAX Freeview Hard disk recorder, and if you wanted permanence, you could then buy a cheap DVD recorder. You could do the both for about 180 pounds.

I have the Humax, and it's brilliant.

aldi also have a HDD recorder with a dvd recorder all in one for £200, then buy their seperate freeview box for £30. Seems cheaper than your £400 estimate.
