BARNSLEY Football Club could be welcoming the best of American talent in the coming years after the Reds Academy formed a partnership with Michigan side Flint Steelers.

Academy Manager Simon Davey recently returned from setting up the partnership in the States which could see elite players arrive at Oakwell in the future.

Simon said: "I went out to Michigan and set up what could be a very mutually beneficial association with Flint Steelers. While I was over there I took five sessions for coaches, parents and their elite youngsters mirroring three-days in the Barnsley Academy.

"We will send members of staff over to the United States next year to run soccer camps for elite youngsters aged between eleven and 18 from all over the Michigan area. The year after we will have a select group of youngsters come over to spend time in the Academy.

"It is a good move for the club and spreads the name and reputation of Barnsley FC throughout Michigan. We are branching out and looking for the best players from throughout the United Kingdom and United States".

    Flint Steelers...

I watched 'Bowling for Columbine' just a couple of nights ago. A lot of it was about Flint which is Michael Moore's home town.

The doco is about gun laws in the US and Flint was featured 'cos an eight year-old got hold of a gun and killed another eight year-old at school.

    That's Flint. That's all.

I seem to remember last year

    some very "hush hush" info about the acadamy being linked with a US / Japanese based media or IT company world wide known that would be a big boost to the team and the club as a whole. I never heard much else so forgot about it and dissmissed it as a wild rumour. I wonder if this is owt to do with it. { Snout to the ground...}

JohnnyCoachman believes in Sir Clive Woodward's visual conditioning.

Yes it is . Most of the big boys have overseas links now.
When they do a tour abroad there are usally some sort of Academy link set up.

Man Utd do quite a bit via The Bobby Charlton Soccer Schools. Africa and China are areas which are seen to have potential for young player recruitement but it's a World wide thing now. They also pick English kids up via these Soccer Schools. Beckham was first spotted by them at one.

Sheff Utd have links with China. I was at their Academy in May and there was a goal keeper who was of Chinese origin training. Only about 14-15 years old. I can't say for sure that he was from China or if he was a Chinese De Da.

We had a link with New Zealand via Colin Walker at one time. Fallon, Bertos, Mulligan and a few others who's names I can't remember came from NZ. I think Fallons Dad coaches over there and he was a mate of Walker.

    RE: Flint Steelers...

If you watch his first film Roger and Me its all about Flint and the depression that followed when General Motors closed their plant there. I suppose there are a lot of similarites with Barnsley, northern town which suffered economically when its main heavy industry was shut down.

Could be some rich pickings for the reds though because i understand that football is the main sport for school and college kids in the states. We might be able to get Mr Moore to wear a reds baseball cap.
