I wonder what the recidivism rate is once they’ve served their full sentence. Is it better?

The longer they stay in prison, the more dodgy stuff they learn

.....and the less crime they commit. There are some people who you are never going to rehabilitate whatever you do. Some people say prison doesn't work because people re-offend. For the most part they end up there because other stuff has been tried first and doesn't work. Keeping them locked up gives us all a rest from them

It's been proven time and again that a prison system that works to rehabilitate prisoners to become contributing members of society is the most effective option. But it'll never happen over here because the Daily Mail et al will accuse us of coddling offenders. Apparently the best thing we can do is treat everyone like irredeemable scum and then act shocked when they are released and reoffend.

I think the point is about early release though mate, not actual rehabilitation. Be interesting to compare the numbers of reoffending, those who've served their full time and those who haven't

I take the point, but I think that even so if we focused more on rehabilitation the recidivism rates would come down even for early release.

I've listened to Rory Stewart on prisons (he was Minister in charge for a couple of years). The prisons were full, there was no money to spend on them, windows broken ,yards full of trash, drugs coming in virtually on tap and prisoners in their cells most of the day as there was no staffing to supervise them out of there cells. Consequently very little rehabilitation, job training was done.
If you lock someone up in those circumstances there's no chance they're going to come out a better person than when they went in.
