Not been a fan all season but I will give credit where its due. Did ok last night and put in a few decent challenges. Well done Wes!
Thought he acquitted himself well to be fair. Didn't get much going forwards but think that's understandable.
Clearly giving credit where credit's due eh?! As I said earlier I think he did OK. Particularly given he's a centre half playing in a formation that gives the full-back very little support.
I wonder why nyatanga wasn't shifted to LB and brown at CB? Fair play to him though he got through the game ok.
Thought he was shocking tbh, constantly too narrow and against a half decent team, they'd have got 10 from that side. Also, I'm not sure why you're saying well done to his brother!
I thought he looked good. Considering he's a right footed centre half playing at left back. Still backs off far too much and doesn't cut the cross out, but made some decent interceptions and wasn't made to look a fool as much as he was earlier on in the season. He put a fantastic sliding tackle in on Main I think it was early in the 2nd half. Full blooded and cleanly got the ball. You could hear the clatter of shins miles away.
I thought he did OK. Couple of times he dawdled with the ball, but I would imagine he's low on confidence after some poor displays, so that's understandable. Donny didn't run at him much, so didn't expose what has been his major weakness this season, but he won headers, made blocks and interceptions and performed his defensive duties well. He didn't let the side down. He's not someone I'd like to see in that position on a regular basis, or at right back for that matter, but he's part of the squad to be called upon when required and he did a job. Having watched their goal again I thought we were really unlucky. Ramage does brilliantly to cut out the cross, but it bounces to a Donny player. He's closed down instantly but his shot goes straight through our defenders legs. I'm not trying to paper over the cracks, we owe a massive debt of gratitude to Ross Turnbull for some superb saves to keep us in it in the first half, but in the second, Donny scored with their only good opportunity. I thought the makeshift defence played quite well, both individually and as a unit. It was our passing game and our ability to keep hold of the ball that let us down against Donny. Maybe that wasn't helped by our full backs staying back and not providing the width going forward, but even so, both Hourihane and Trotta had numerous opportunities to play in our forwards for a chance on goal, but they misplaced their passes. Personally I think Holgate and Brown did the right thing by concentrating on their defensive duties, rather than attempting to be wing backs. If those were the instructions from Wilson I applaud them. The system we play doesn't require marauding full backs, that's a bonus when we're full of confidence. It does, however, require that our more skilful players pass the ball well, like they have in the past, much better than they did on Tuesday, but unfortunately it was a bad night for them.
