was listening to talk sport this morning and the host came up with a very interesting idea. 3rd place automatically goes to wembley 6th play 5th away from home in a one leg tie. the winner plays away at 4th place one leg the winner of that game plays the 3rd place team in the final this method also stops teams in the top 6 playing youngsters in the last few games as the higher place team have the advantage. fire away with your pro's and cons!!!
Personally I don't like the play off system. I think they are detrimental to the development of the younger players. Before the play offs, you could be reasonably sure of having 3 or 4 games at the end of the season that counted for nothing. The manager could then bring in a few youngsters who are on the verge of making the breakthrough & assess them in a league match as opposed to the reserves. It's not really feasible to do that these days because it can happen that every game counts for something for either or both of the teams. If you field a weakened team, those who would be affected by the result would have cause for complaint, in my opinion.
I think that if you finish third you should get a bonus for doing so - straight to the final is a good idea. The team who were bottom of the playoffs should have to do more to get up. How often do you see a team put a run together at the end of the season and snatch that last place, then use the momentum to snatch promotion off a team who, over the course of the season clocked up more points?
I think the play-offs are fine as they are. They keep the season alive for a lot of clubs and bring some end of season excitement. Everybody knows the rules at the start of the season, if you finish 6th you get in the play-offs and have a chance of promotion. Alls fair IMO.
First and second promoted. Third go through to play off final, while fourth play fifth to get to the play off final.
The playoffs are brilliant as they are. As long as it's not Barnsley involved, that is. The game at Huddersfield and the final almost killed me last season.
OH what about... Third go to the final, fourth goes toasemi, fifth and sixth play a quarter final (one off, not two legs).
NOW - here's the twist. (wicked)
Playoff final:
Winner gets promoted.
Loser plays the club that camefourth bottom in the Premto see who stays or goes.
That ought to shake things up a bit.

I like that idea. similar has happened (or still happens, im not sure) in Scotland. Although the calibre of teams that are in the Premiership IMO (from next season especially) are far better equipped than the teams in the Championship, and I think it would always be the Premiership team that would prevail. The odd exception do get promoted and do really well, but not usually before they have had a good pre-season of transfer activity.
but if it was the fourth place it's like a bonus wild card... ...I reckon that, as you say, most of the time, the prem team would win - but now and again you'd get a twist, and there would usually be some drama.
So long as it didn't limit the three teams going up (i.e. it was for a bonus promotion chance) I think it would be interesting.

Bingo! Easy really. Play offs, while exciting, are an insult. The more consistent team over the entire season, for my money, earns the right to go up.
Didn't one of the old 1st division clubs play in it at the start? Wasn't it three from div 2 + 1 from 1st division( Premiership for all you young 'uns)
Fair point... But I suppose that you earn that for being the best team over the season... The way suggested above is better, and was what I suggested yonks ago
