Top Carlisle United transfer target Paul Reid will ask Barnsley to terminate his contract if he gets the chance to return to Brunton Park. United boss John Ward has already admitted he would love to sign the Carlisle-born defender, who spent six weeks on loan with his home-town team at the end of last season. Signing an extra central defender is Ward’s key priority this summer as he is without cover or competition for Danny Livesey and Peter Murphy. Reid is on the transfer list at Oakwell but the stumbling block is that he still has a year to run on his present deal and any summer move to Carlisle hinges on Tykes boss Simon Davey, right, making him available on a free. The 26-year-old is currently home in Harraby where he is already preparing for the new campaign after last season was overshadowed by a knee injury, which forced him to cut short his loan stay at United. Reid said: “I worked really hard to get into the Championship with Barnsley and, if I was dropping out of it, I would only join a team I believe has every chance of getting into the Championship – and Carlisle fits the bill. “I think me and Barnsley could come to an agreement and terminate my contract by mutual consent but I can’t do that until there is an offer from another club I’m interested in. “I don’t think Barnsley are going to do anything until there is an offer for me. I can’t go to ask to be released until I know a club is going to make me an offer. It’s very much a case of waiting for clubs to come up with offers. I’ve had offers but they weren’t what I wanted.” Ward has dismissed speculation he is preparing to make a bid for Hibernian’s former Newcastle United winger Alan O’Brien. O’Brien has been linked with a move away from the SPL club after failing to make an impact in Scotland’s top-flight since his arrival from the Magpies last summer. Carlisle, Hartlepool and Preston North End have all been linked with 23-year-old O’Brien, but Ward has denied any interest from the Blues.
So Reid wants Barnsley to come to an agreement on his contract and Carlise don't want to pay anything. Have Barnsley got M U G S stamped over their foreheads? FFS - He is a decent defender with Championship experience. We had to pay £100k to Northampton when he wasn't as good or as experienced.
