Why is it that religion does exactly the opposite of what it is meant to do? Perhaps it is because it was dreampt up by a small group of people who wanted to control the masses and subdivide them into groups which were easily controlled and controllable. Just look at the attitude to women in many religions. I am a male but think that some of the attitudes to females in many different societies stinks. Look at how some religions treat the women in their group, making them marry against their will, being subservient and making them dress in a certain way - surely a control measure which they do not have any choice about! (and yes I am talking about our culture too!) Even in this country, there seems to be an acceptance that the female is the 'lower' being. Is it not the case that 'driving like a woman' or as someone I know recently said 'washing up is women's work' is akin to racism? e.g. the colour of skin/ gender of a person is the reason why ALL of the said people are stereotyped in this way? It is because of religion that this is the case. No religion would mean no war, no sexism and (possibly) no racism. Is it me or is society getting beyond being able to tolerate even the slightest mistake made by another person? (Road rage, neighbour disputes etc etc.) I know this is supposed to be a football bulletin board, but some of the discussions about religion and related topics make me despair about the way some people think and behave in a so called modern society and what my 2 daughters will have to face when they grow up. Is it just me or can I expect more for them than what I encounter today?

There should only be the 1 religion, the Church of Oakwell! You reeeeeds!

I don't think religion is to blame for all the ills of the world - politics has a large part to play too.

What I think we're seeing in this country is the full extent of Thatcher's legacy, the 'me first and to hell with anybody else' culture she created - remember 'there is no such thing as society'? That wasn't a preacher, it was a stupid and misguided politician.

We're now moving into the second generation of Thatcher's children and I, like you, fear for the future which I think can only get worse.

    Thatcher's Britain!

I remember it all too well! I totally agree, society, or what is left of it has become introverted and selfish. The trouble is there are multitudes of people who see Thatcher as a goddess and think she did no wrong. I still believe though that religion precludes politics and has made us the way we are today - a completely male dominated, oriented society which will kill itself in the very near future unless something drastic can be done.

SH*T how depressed am I making myself - surely it is close season blues???

I used to think that the answer was to go and live on a secluded island and rule my own domain far away from anywhere but I don't think I would get in any other countries for fear of being an assylum seeker or immigrant! What happened to being free to go wherever you wanted - a free country and planet has seemed to have turned into a closed shop!

    RE: Thatcher's Britain!

I'm not sure we're any less tolerant of women - they've always been downtrodden.

I remember when I was a kid it was commonplace for a man's wages to be just that - he gave the wife her 'housekeeping' and the rest was his. She never even knew how much he earned!

Thankfully my own dad never behaved like that, but believe me it was commonplace up to the late 50s/early 60s.

And as for women being 'matched' into marriage, that was equally commonplace in the west into the early part of the 20th century.

We may even have exported the concept into our "glorious" empire.

    Talking out your @rse

For every man who gave his wife housekeeping there were five "Lou Beales" who took the pay packet out of his hand and gave the husband "pocket money"
