Just seen an article on WAB saying there is now some progress in the redevelopment with market stalls being moved. Now this has been going on 15 years or so and all that's come out of it is a number of failed negotiations with large department stores, a block of flats and a fancy office block and a good number of consultants mortgages paid off. In the same time, sheffields had a new market complex, Rotherham park gates expanded, Doncaster have the frenchgate(?) and wakey has been ripped to bits and rebuilt where the old bus station is. Why is there so many issues with barnsley council moving things forward? It's embarrassing.
come on you lot , you love a good moan , its what you were brought up to do , if Steve sorted it and Don popped his clogs you would have no reason to be alive , Steve is serving the community
They are talking about ripping down the new market hall, only been up a few years and building another Cinema !
I think you'll find, like all politicians, Councillors are in it for the rich pickings. Remind me what his salary is and exactly what he's done for Barnsley to warrant that salary.
Wakefield next to the bus station . It has only been up a few years and they now want to demolish it and build another multiplex cinema there.
Thing what I don't get about out is we made initial plans, was too expensive. Changed the plans and raised 80% of the money needed. Then decided to do a bodge job for about 70% cheaper which to be honest looks more modern but not an improvement. Why not raise the 20% extra over 3 or 4 years instead have something we don't want. Crazy, it's like Man Utd looking to re-sign Ronaldo but deciding he's too expensive and signing Keith Gillespie instead.
And in that time in Barnsley we have had new places and spaces such as The Civic, The Digital Media Centre, a new Interchange, redevelopment of Queen's Court, new council offices at Westgate and the Plaza complex etc.
Where is he serving the community? As the original article says why is our town centre still the same sh*t ole it was in the 70's. Even bradford are moving forward with a development afte 10 or so years of stale mate. Our council have looked after themselves and their friends hee. Why did they bail out the gateway plaza when it was supposed to be private money? All that is happening with our market is a revamp!!!!! Wow, brilliant! And as for what this council has done to education, mmmmmmmmm. Sorry, the people on our council have done NOTHING for this town. They cant even piut someone in charge to sort the fekin bins out correctly, and just look how lomg the Wickes area took to get sorted. Smany people on the council and in high positions the need to take a look at if they are able to hold these positions. Rant over
New interchange was financed by South Yorkshire Transport as was Sheffield, Rotherham and Donny donkeys years before Barnsley got theirs. Council Offices, gateway Plaza etc was a complete ****-up as was the Wickes roundabout. Offices were empty so they moved in leaving behind the best Town hall in the country as a museum. No idea what Queen's Court is. Aye they're brilliant our council.
The title of the thread is Remaking Barnsley and the post originator was suggesting that nothing had been achieved whilst improvements had been made to those towns around us. I was merely adding balance by way of fact not personal opinion.
The trouble is 'Remaking Barnsley' was a failed scheme, yes new stuff has been built but these were always on the periphery to the real aim of the scheme which was to replace the entire Metropolitan Centre. All they are doing now is demolishing buildings which have been stood empty for the best part of a decade and not really replacing it with anything but open space. I suppose the way we shop has changed, I buy 90% of my clothes online because it's massively cheaper and can often get things delivered the next morning at no extra cost. I realise I'm not helping the economy of Barnsley but, like most people, I have to make my money go as far as I can and it doesn't go very far on a high street. In a few years there will more than likely be another housing boom so I reckon the council should start preparing land in the town centre for residential development as opposed to commercial. Not necessarily what I would like to happen but being pragmatic it's got to better than spending millions on a plan that does nothing to entice people into Barnsley instead of Meadowhall. For that you'd need a big chain multiplex cinema and the hipster hangouts like Nando's, Yo Sushi and Starbucks.
Apologies mate. I've always been skeptical of councillors/politicians in general ever since the expenses scandals so jump into the attack whenever anyone tries to defend them.
i watched this last night and this bloke was spot on! Worth a watch! <iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/4K-53widcdY" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> I think they reuined barnsley when they pulled half of it down to replace with some concrete eyesores.
