Just to inform, I have this morning received a written reply through the door from my local MP (Hemsworth) Jon Trickett, in response to the fact that I emailed him to ask him to sign Eric Illsley's Early Day Motion on Iain Hume. I know full well that the end outcome will be more platitudes and lack of real action from those he has forwarded the issue on to, but I am very pleased to see that he has taken the time and trouble to reply to me and to forward the issue on. He has written to the Minister for Sport (Gerry Sutcliffe) and Brian Barwick at the FA, and included copies of these letters to me as well. Top man. His reply is as follows, with the letter (virtually same text to both) sent to Sutcliffe and Barwick below: --- Dear xxxx Thank you for writing to me about the Iain Hume incident at the Barnsley Vs Sheffield United game. These derby games, as you know, are always heated but there can be no excuse for a player ending up needing such intense medical care. The extent of Iain Hume's injuries is truly shocking. The issue has been brought up in Parliament by Barnsley MP, Eric Illsley, in the form of an Early Day Motion. You may be aware that I am the Parliamentary Private Secratary to the Prime Minister (No I wasn't aware!). This means that I am considered a member of the Government. Early Day Motions are used by backbench MPs to highlight particular issues with the Government and Parliamentary procedures therefore preclude me from signing EDMs. However, I have written to the Minister for Sport and the Chief Executive of the Football Association to ask them to address the concerns you have raised. I will be in touch as soon as I receive a response but please do not hesitate to get in touch if there is anything I can help you with. Yours Sincerely, Jon Trickett MP ------ (variations in text in brackets) Dear Gerry / (Mr Barwick) I have been contacted by a number of my constituents who are concerned about an incident that occurred at the recent Barnsley Vs Sheffield United football game. As I am sure you are aware, Iain Hume was seriosuly injured in this game, needing to be kept on a high dependancy ward due to his skull fracture. My constituents are very concerned that this was allowed to happen with no real penalty for the player who injured Mr Hume - on seeing the extent of the injury, a yellow card seems to be a very light penalty for such a serious result. My constituents want to see protections for Barnsley players and for all players in league and non-league football - what actions can the government take (is the FA taking) to ensure that this incident does not happen again. Yours Sincerely, Jon Trickett MP ----
Thats a very positive response- maybe best we've had so far Hopefully this will now get aired in Parliament and show the FA up for being the spineless gets they are
One line in there will get the FA a bit worried what actions can the government take (is the FA taking) to ensure that this incident does not happen again. The idea of the government intervening in the middle of a world cup bid will definitely have got their attention. As you say - nothing will come of it for Hume - but it might at least get some changes to prevent people getting away with similar in future
