FULL TIME FROM TURF MOOR

    BURNLEY 4 (Harley 42; Noel-Williams 56, 83, 89)
    BARNSLEY 2 (McIndoe 21, 32)

BARNSLEY were hit by two controversial refereeing decisions that allowed the home side to come back from two down to take all three points at Turf Moor.

Reds boss Andy Ritchie recalled Antony Kay to the starting eleven after the defender completed a one-game suspension following his dismissal at Norwich City. Dale Tonge was the unlucky one as Kay came straight back in at centre half with Bobby Hassell switching out to right back against the Clarets.

Goal hero Tommy Wright, who notched his first of the season at Oakwell on Saturday, had to be content with a place on the bench as Ritchie again went with Marc Richards and Paul Hayes up front.

Burnley made changes to the side and formation that lost against Colchester with Michael Duff and Wade Elliott coming in as Steve Cotterill looked to halt a run of three home defeats by going back to 4-4-2. Kyle Lafferty and club captain Frank Sinclair were dropped following last weekend's home reverse. The home side also had former Crewe defender Stephen Foster - who snubbed a switch to Oakwell in favour of Turf Moor in the summer - on the bench

The home side started brightly with Harley ringing the alarm bells on five minutes with a dangerous cross that Nick Colgan did well to turn away for a corner. From Alan Mahon's kick Michael Duff rose highest 14 yards out but could only head straight at Colgan when well placed.

Barnsley were not going to be overawed in an end to end opening to the game and Sam Togwell's long throw caused all sorts of problems for the Burnley defence two minutes later. It eventually fell to Robbie Williams, who forced Brian Jensen into a fine save with a well-struck shot.

At the other end Wade Elliott found a yard of space to get a cross in on eight minutes and Andy Gray did well to nip in front of Kay but his flick was deflected through to Colgan.

Again Burnley moved the ball well on ten minutes as Steve Jones managed to get the better of Kay before finding Micah Hyde in space but the striker could only fire straight at Colgan again from 20 yards.

Martin Devaney found himself in acres of space on the right wing on 15 minutes as the Reds pressed and the winger sent in a wonderful cross in front of Jensen but just ahead of Richards and McIndoe on the six yard box.

Brian Howard almost brought the opening goal for skipper Paul Reid as his free kick caught out the Clarets defence but the defender saw his volley deflect away for a corner.

Again the Reds pressed a minute later as Sam Togwell's chipped ball fell neatly for Richards but his shot was blocked clear. From the rebound Reid hammered the ball off a defender and towards the corner but Jensen pulled of a world-class save to deny Barnsley a goal.

Burnley pressed again and it was Elliott once more who provided the ammunition with a swinging cross on 20 minutes but Jones could only head wide from six yards.

The Reds were in front just a minute later as McIndoe managed to beat the offside trap and race clean through on goal. The winger took his time and coolly slotted the ball under Jensen and into the back of the net.

Burnley came back and Duff sent off a dangerous cross on 25 minutes that beat the Reds defence to come out to Mahon but the midfielder's shot was comfortable for Colgan.

The Reds second came on 32 minutes as Burnley spectacularly exploded at the back with Duff gifting the ball to Hayes on the half way line. The striker quickly sent McIndoe away behind the Clarets defence and the Scot made no mistake beating Jensen under pressure.

Burnley were rattled and ragged and Cotterill wasted no time in changing things around by hauling off Mahon on 33 minutes and sending on an extra attacker in big Gifton Noel-Williams. It almost paid off four minutes later as Noel-Williams got his head onto Duff's cross but could not direct his effort on target.

The Reds were a little lucky to escape on 38 minutes as Elliott's driven shot struck Williams' on the elbow but the referee waved away Burnley's vociferous appeals for a penalty.

The Reds were undone on 42 minutes as Burnley's neat free kick gave a shooting chance for Harley and the full back lashed his effort past Colgan from 25 yards out.

Barnsley had a massive let off deep in stoppage time as Wayne Thomas rose unchallenged to meet Elliott's corner but somehow headed straight at Colgan when it was probably easier to score.

Burnley started the second half strongly with Cotterill's words obviously ringing in their ears. Andy Gray flashed a volley inches over the top on 49 minutes before Colgan was called into action a minute later to claw Jones' cross away from Noel-Williams. At the other end Togwell brought a save from Jensen on 51 minutes after good play down the right wing by Devaney as the Reds looked to fight back.

Burnley almost got lucky on 55 minutes as Jensen's long kick hit Kay on the back before bouncing nicely for Noel-Williams but the striker could not find a finish and hammered his shot high over the top from 16 yards.

The home side were level in controversial circumstances on 56 minutes as the referee shockingly refused to let Reid back into the action from the sidelines after being ordered off to re-attach his armband despite waiting to come onto the park for at least 30 seconds giving Clarets a man advantage. Burnley took advantage of the extra man with Elliott crossing from the right to give Noel-Williams a simple header on the six yard box.

The Reds were incandescent with rage but let their football do the talking on 62 minutes as Devaney and Richards combined well to set up Hayes but the striker could only shoot straight at Jensen with McIndoe in acres of space on the far side of the box.

Again the Reds broke quickly with Devaney beating three players easily on 65 minutes before playing in McIndoe but this time the winger could not hit the target with a well-struck shot.

Richards' pace and power caught out John McGreal again on 66 minutes as he burst through the middle and left the Clarets defender with no choice but to hack him down. McGreal was shown a yellow card and Devaney smacked the free kick against the underside of the bar but away to safety.

The game swung again down the other end with James O'Connor finding a pass through to Jones but Colgan stood up to make a fine save. Harley then managed to beat the offside trap on 72 minutes and cut back before forcing Colgan into a low save with a shot from just inside the box.

Hayes managed to dig a cross out of nothing on 78 minutes to give a chance to McIndoe in the middle and the ball eventually fell to Wright but the substitute could not get his volley on target through a host of Clarets defenders.

Burnley again took advantage of a shocking refereeing decision to grab a third on 83 minutes as the home side took a quick free kick 15-yards away from where the offence had taken place to catch out the Reds defence. The ball eventually made its way into the area to Hyde, who picked out a perfect pass through to Noel-Williams to net his second of the game.

A slip by Reid almost gifted Noel-Williams his hat trick on 87 minutes as the striker managed to get a yard in the area but Colgan was in the right place to turn his shot away.

Noel-Williams finally got his third on 89 minutes and it had more to do with luck than judgement as the striker got in the way of Hyde's driven shot and the ball cannoned off him and wrong-footed Colgan on its way into the corner of the net.

What were these controversial decisions? Did he twice allow a goal to count double or something?

We really are **** if two decisions cost us 4 goals.

    Well they were

Letting them take a quick free kick from the wrong place - not sure thats such a big deal

ordering Reid off to replace his captains arm band then not letting him on - if thats true thats rediculous refereeing, cant see why he needs to leave the pitch for that
