Bottom-of-the-table Barnsley held out for their first away point of the season as fellow Coca-Cola Championship strugglers failed to take advantage of a dominant display at St Mary's. The Saints had the lion's share of possession throughout but their lack of cutting edge cost them on this occasion as they found returning Reds goalkeeper Heinze Muller in unbeatable form. Bradley Wright-Phillips, Tomas Pekhart and Adam Lallana were all denied by the German, who has not featured for the Tykes since the middle of last season, as Jan Poortvliet's side once again failed to shine in front of their own fans. The Tykes will be grateful of the point as they were outplayed for the majority of the match and failed to really test Southampton goalkeeper Kelvin Davis during the 90 minutes. That meant Iain Hume was moved up alongside Kayode Odejayi in attack. Czech striker Pekhart earned a place in Saints' XI after he came off the bench to score the equaliser against Ipswich on Wednesday, while Wright-Phillips and Joseph Mills were also recalled to the starting line-up. And Poortvliet's decision to change his side seemed to pay dividends early on as both Wright-Phillips and Pekhart tested Muller with instinctive shots. The German did well to deny Wright-Phillips in particular as his effort seemed destined for the bottom corner before Muller's outstretched hand eased it round the post. Barnsley's first attempt came from the boot of Hume who shot over from just six yards after a throw from Rob Kozluk had caused havoc in the Saints penalty area. The chance seemed to lift the visitors and they began to come more into the game with De Silva sending a shot wide from 25 yards, but their defensive frailties were always evident and they were again thankful to Muller as he saved a Simon Gillett shot with his feet. Southampton began the stronger after the interval and Lallana was quick to test Muller with a shot from outside the penalty area and 10 minutes later he produced a carbon-copy which the goalkeeper was again equal to. Davey introduced winger Martin Devaney with 20 minutes to go as the Tykes looked to inject some creativity into their attacking play. But the midfielder, who scored a last-minute winner in the corresponding fixture last season, found it hard to make any sort of impact as the Saints dominated. Muller was again the foil of Lallana on two more occasions as the hosts pushed on for the winner. Hume had arguably the best chance of the match when he tiptoed round Davis, but the former Leicester man could only put his shot into the side netting. David McGoldrick came close to netting a last-gasp winner for the Saints but once again Muller stood firm and saved his 20-yard volley.
