Barnsley 2 (Kyle Wyatt 2) Huddersfield 1

The young (very young) reds have improved tremendously from the very inexperienced side that I saw ealier in the season and fully deserved to win today. Had Adam Jordan taken any of three easy second half chances, the scoreline would have been more appropriate. Luke Potter who looked out of his depth earlier in the season at left back now looks secure playing with Rhys Meynell at centre back. The 2 forwards ( Josh Wright and Kyle Wyatt) who looked like rabbits caught in headlights 4 months ago are also maturing nicely. The star for me though was a player that I have not seen before, who I assume has been promoted from the under 16s. Danny Smith played left back. He is two footed and hit some glorious crosses with both feet, one of which resulted in the second goal. A future star I think.
All those who argue that the academy is not worthwhile should get down and watch the lads every now and again - then they might at least know what they were talking about.

But there's no way you'll ever convince me an academy, especially in our current state, is worthwhile.

Have you got any idea how much we'd save by closing the academy?

I would suspect that it wont actually be an awful lot.

    Not an awful lot.

Even at top Premiership Clubs the maximum salary advertised in the FA Coaches Association magazine for a coach to work with the 16-19 year olds is usually around £30-35K.
Lets not also forget the £1M indoor academy building is also used by the 1st team squad so Academy facilities are shared.

I think the Academy is the way forward for the Club but it won't produce players year on year. It will be cyclic just like any other Academy. Some years you may get two players coming through in other years you may not get any.

My own opinion is that we don't spend enough on the Academy. I dont think we have enough coaches in there.

    RE: Nice report

Apparently, although I have not seen them, Barnsley have a very good boys team this year. Now, there is no guarantee that a good 15 year old will go on to make it as a professional. The last team but one to win the English Schools Trophy did not produce one good pro, not even the keeper who played for England at the under 15 level. Nevertheless, how many of the current crop of schoolboys would come to Barnsley if we did not have an academy. There are academies at Sheffield United, Sheffield Wednesday, Leeds and Huddersfield. Would the cream of the crop not take their future talents to one of those clubs. Are you going to be able to defend your position in 10 years when the members of this board are calling the club short sighted because they missed out on a lad who went elsewhere and who made it big.

    Easily.

Under the current regulations, the academy system means f**k all. Anyone can still get a Barnsley-based player to play for them. Transfers exist at 10 year old level. Worse, if you are showing any genuine promise, you and your family will be relocated so that you fall into the interested team's 'capture' area. That's why a Cockney like Beckham 'emerged' from Man Utd's academy, despite West Ham doing most of the hard work.

So, in essence, unless the major clubs' scouts really, really suck, we'll be left with people who aren't good enough to play at a higher level.

You only need to look at our current crop - been in existence since the Premier, and so far we've produced a crop of players who struggle to secure a regular place in a team that may - and that's may - scrape us out of a second-rate third division.

If you've got the money of an Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea et al, who can afford to throw millions a year in the hope that one of them might get a regular sub's place or turn in to a Rooney, it's great.

Us? If they're good enough at the time, others can poach them. If they 'blossom' others can afford them by paying their training costs (not a transfer - the amount it has cost to train them - them's the rules). If we're really, really lucky, we might get someone like Flinders, who may or may not be bought by Chelsea and in doing so, may or may not pay for the costs of running the f**king thing in the first place and leave us wihout a decent keeper prospect.

    Or is that just me?

Yes, Frost came on for the last 20 minutes and played in midfield. By that time the young lads were tired and the centre forward had gone off injured so we were being pushed back. He worked hard but did not feature much.

    RE: Easily.

You make some fair points about the possibility of Barnsley acquiring and holding on to someone with the talent of for example Wayne Rooney. However, even Everton failed to hold on to him, and there is no doubt that if the top four come knocking there is nothing any club can do about it. Nevertheless, I do think that we should be able to compete locally for emerging talent. The academy allows us to do that. I just wish that the youngsters that are given their chance in the first team be allowed to develop by the supporters. They are critisised if they are not world beaters from minute one of their debuts. Nicky Wroe is the latest in a long line who have been chased off by the so called experts in the East Stand, no insult intended.
