He was yes from the age of 6. Signed pro and made 9 first team appearances. From Pontefract. I think a lot were surprised we let him go when we did.
Whilst I liked him when he was here, you could say we were justified in letting him go considering he's not played above league 2 since and he's now 27. Same could be said for George Maris too who I also rated (despite the single worst performance I've ever seen from a reds player against Altrincham).
Agree, was just pointing out he looked a good prospect and was highly regarded by the powers that be within the academy at the time. Also we had several seasoned pros. So was surplus to requirements at the time. That was my take on the situation.
How on Earth did you manage to single out one player from that particular match?! Not one player put a foot right all game!
I don't remember a single thing about Oates. I remember Maris, although more the name than seeing him play, but not Oates. I hadn't realised he'd been our player until Hooky's post.
I remember Nathan Jarman was going to be a wonder kid. Around time we were in admin. One person told me he was this young Icelandic striker we'd picked up but couldn't sign him. He was just on trial but the club called him Nathan Jarman to throw people off the scent. I was in total shock when he played and his name was Nathan Jarman. Not Bjorn, plain old Nathan from Barnsley.
My brother was a friend of the family Jay and knew he was on the books. So I took particular note at the time. As for Maris I'm in exactly the same position as you. As for the Altrincham game on Archie's comment. Tyketanic had it bang on. One of the worst among many bad team performances I've ever seen.
In a game where nobody covered themselves in glory, I believe George Maris was dragged off at half time (if I'm remembering correctly).
Jamil Adam was another supposed top prospect, was awesome on Football Manager! And who was that young striker we had who ended up in prison for killing someone in a car accident?
