Aye, just read that myself ... people don't think about the impact of VAT in particular.

I haven't been misled I already know that I am being ripped off however I do think that if you took VAT out of these figures they would possibly look a bit different.

Taxation is taxation, whether it is direct taxation or indirect taxation
    .
Indirect taxation has a significantly bigger impact on those less able to afford it.

There has been a significant shift in recent years from direct taxation to indirect taxation.

No wonder the rich are getting richer.

    Rant over

This was started by the tories but not only were labour acquiescent to this they also promoted/endorsed this

    Well done comrade.

You've just made the richer even richer and the poorer even poorer.

    Even simpler.

I think that would have the opposite effect to what the OP is proposing.

Your proposal of increasing VAT will increase the price of everything. In your opinion that will mean people will buy more stuff. Is that what you're saying?

I would say that moving everything to direct taxation so that all goods are now 20% cheaper would be much more likely to give a boost to the economy
Also people would travel here to buy things cheaper, companies would relocate here to ship goods etc etc

Direct taxation is also inherently fairer

    Oh aye course they will.................

Minimum wage (assuming 40 hrs per week & over 21) - will have a whopping £12 per week to blow
Minimum wage under 21 will have nowt extra

Oh and the greedy bankers will have so much cash to spend that they will probably buy an overseas apartment in the Spain or elsewhere....nice boost to our economy....NOT

Because this is about the proportion of earnings that is tax and the less well off are more affected by VAT so putting it up would affect the lower income group disproportionately.

But they don't win with a VAT rise to 30%, they lose every time they buy something and as those on lower incomes spend more of their disposable income than the rich its not the answer.

I do wonder what the government and it's local subsidiaries do with our money.

Most of us are PAYE, out of our already taxed income we have council tax, the cost of fuel is mostly tax, VAT, and loads of other little one-off taxes on various things we might buy throughout the year...car tax, carbon taxes on flights etc.

Then the government says they have no money.
