Vale boss Martin Foyle made his move for Richards after the forward was released by Barnsley earlier this week.

Foyle has been tracking Richards for some time and saw a swap deal with Leon Constantine fall through earlier this season.

Foyle was delighted to finally land his man.

"I'm absolutely delighted. He could have been part of the deal with Leon in January, but I was after him two years prior to that, when he was at Northampton," Foyle told the club's official website.

"He is a player I've liked. He is a workhorse, he makes decent runs and he is capable of scoring goals in a higher league.

"I'm not putting pressure on the lad to churn out 20 goals, but I know he will make us a better team."
