Absolute legend of cricket. I never saw him play, obviously, but to me growing up and older, he was the voice of cricket.

    RIP.

RIP - loved his commentary - testimony as to how good he was was the fact he was from Australia yet still fronted the BBC cricket coverage - one of the best

Absolute legend of a cricket commentator. No one will ever be as good. Another part of growing up in the 70s and 80s has gone. RIP Richie.....

The best bar none. Top bloke that constantly turned down working for Sky as he thought Cricket should be available to the wider audience. Didn't insult the inteligence of the viewers by stating the bleeding obvious. Deserves the state funeral the Aussie PM has offered his family.

Amongst my best sports commentators ever. He had the skill of not stating the obvious; knowing when not to say anything, but let the pictures speak for themselves; having incredible insights into what was going on on the pitch and advancing your understanding, not just of the game in general, but of the scenario being acted out during that over, or that particular ball. Special memory was when you could over-hear him politely asking the camera-man to zoom in on Garth McKenzie's hands during his walk-back. He was lifting the seam. Benaud made no comment and didn't realise the mike had picked up his voice faintly in the background. He made no comment at all, but let the pictures speak. Really appreciated his terrific skills, both as player and as commentator. RIP.

Very sad news indeed. I used to love listening to Richie, John Arlott & Jim Laker back in the day. No need for OTT criticism, or over analysis of every little aspect for them. Spoke with authority without condescension to the viewer or listener and with an obvious love for the game.
R.I.P. Richie. You were a big part of my long departed youth.

Yes, and compare those giants of the mic to modern day idiots like Blofeld. I have nothing against Old Etonian types blathering away on TMS provided they are good at what they do. "Blowers" doesn't quite fit into that category.

    RIP Richie
