The lad had been receiving high praise for recent performances... Imho I would cash in on Mellis and Golbourne... And spend cash on experience Richie Wellens to add quality to midfield and supply for forwards... I would release Alnwick and McNulty not good enough IMHO... Replace with Lee Camp and Chris Baird both northern Irish internationals... Camp would push Steele for starting place. And Baird would add experience and quality to the back line. Camp Baird, Mvoto, Nytanga Wisemen, Wellens, Etuhu, RNL McCourt Pedersen & O'Grady
Will Wellens stop us from conceding goals...? Potentially yeah, Wellens is quality on the ball and has ability/experience/composure to play midfield general role... if we keep possession and dominate play... we limit chances for the opposition to score... If our attacker get quality supply from midfield they will have more chance of scoring goals... and Wellens chips in with goals from Midfield, last player to do that was Brian Howard... Goal scoring midfielder has been lacking for some time... Fact Perks/Daws/Mellis give ball away to easily, don't provide enough supply for the forwards or contribute enough goals from midfield they don't... Mellis is potentially a world beater but never looks fit and is complacent (will we ever see the best of him?)... Perkins has a good engine and works exceptionally hard for the team, needs to be stood down from free kicks (wasted) and stop dwelling on the ball in our defensive 3rd... Dawson is grafter and a hot head, another ball winner and IMO cannot play in central role with Perkins to light weight (a poor mans lampard / Gerard combo)... If you read further I would bring in Lee Camp and Chris Baird to shore up the defence... Steele needs competition for his place becoming to complacent... Experience needed through the spine of the team. We have a very young team, and experience is perhaps one thing we currently lack...
Its not just the defenders that are causing our woes imo its the defending as a team which includes mid fielders ad forwards. The second goal conceded at Blackburn was disgraceful for the team as a whole not just defenders. Jordan Rhodes was free to do whatever he liked in our penalty area
I would be happy to see Mellis leave now to be honest and Wellens would be an ideal replacement. The question is, why is he leaving Donny as they seem to be on the up at the moment? We've got to keep Golbourne. Not for just the fact he's a good player and can be utilised in a number of positions but things blatantly still haven't changed behind the scenes if we sell one of our more consistent performers to a League 1 side. Can't see Lee Camp joining as his wages for goalkeeping competition would be too much. Chris Baird would be an excellent signing and could be the type of ball playing defender we need. Let M'Voto and Cranie do the hard work and tackling and let Nyatanga or Baird be the ball playing centre half. I think it would be harsh to not play Cranie for M'Voto or Nyatanga. We seem to fall apart without Cranie and he was our rock last season.
Woah! Are you on glue? You start a thread on a player at a rival club who isn't being linked with us and end up posting a team complete with three new players! That's ****ed up
And you've also never seen McCourt play. Only seen 30 mins of Pederson. And wellens, camp and Baird will probably never be barnsley players. Some off our fans need to wake up and stop posting rubbish
Wow. That is some ****** up opinion. Donny win a couple, and that - without watching the bloke play - is enough to convince you that Wellens should replace Mellis? Mellis who scored 6 and directly assisted 12 other goals last season. Wellens won't match those stats if he plays another 3 years at this level. Which he won't. Last goal scoring creative midfielder? Er, Jacob Mellis. And before that Butterfield. Dunno why am replying to someone who looks at the free agent list and then decrees that PLAYER Z is better than any of our players. Btw, I saw Lee Camp a few times last year. If you think Steele drops clangers...
All players were mentioned in original thread... They are all experienced highly regarded and available... Just raising debate... It currently feels like Steele is irreplaceable, and Alnwick is not challenging him for his place? Camp is a good championship keeper and would push him all the way for start. A I said Mellis is a potential world beater, but rarely makes 90mins. Never looks fit. And only if clubs make substatial offer is it worth considering. As for Golbourne rarely stays at club for more than a year. Good attacker but questionable in defence. If Wolves offer good money I'd take it. McCourt, Jennings, and RNL all natural left sided attackers. And Mellis. RNL also proved he can play LB.
