Who has read it? What were your thoughts? I'm going to be a bit of a knob and wait to see a few opinions before sharing my own. I'm intrigued.
I thought he was a bit of a ******. I'm a bit biased though, he talks about a relative in it, my relatives stories a bit different to his though. I also found it very hard to read in parts.
I hope he's lying because if he isn't it doesn't show Cryne or Shepherd in the best light. Things could have been much different if Chopra and McPhail were signed up like they wanted to be.
**** it. I'll give my opinion. It's very much like yours. I found it a basterd to read, far too much waffle for no apparent reason. Basically goes around the houses to say **** all. The 'disgraceful treatment' he refers to seemed a bit exaggerated also. I expected some belting accusations. But it was basically him saying "Cryne and Shepherd were cnuts because I think they're cnuts". There was little substance or evidence to back it up. Just seemed paranoid. I fully applaud what he and Ritchie achieved. But I've read the book and just think less of him in particular, not so much Andy, mind. The bit about them putting young lads on for 5 minutes to make sure the board had to pay them more money in appearance fees? Did he think we'd find that funny like?
Are there any retailers where I can pick this book up for a few quid? I don't really want to spend a tenner on something that I know is going to be a bit crap (like almost every other football book I've read to be fair)
Its not uncommon in football,Mark Robins(at Rotherham) used to have to get his assistant to contact the owner on his mobile to get permission to use certain subs due to the extra cost involved.
He can't write. Some of it is boring as hell. It's supposed to be a book about his time at Barnsley but the majority of it isn't. However, the bits about Messrs Davey and Shepherd are ******* brilliant. Very surprised if he hasn't had to use the services of a solicitor mind.
But if he was telling lies, then surely Cryne and Shepherd would have sued for libel? I have heard nothing about it if they have, has anyone? The book has been out for about 12 months now so if they were going to do then they would have ?
I got to the Liverpool victory at Anfield, and then had to put it down because I was enjoying it so much that i didn't want to finish it. I just wish there was more reading material focusing on that period. I read faster than Scott Wiseman runs/talks, which doesn't help. Should have seen my face when I saw that r lass had got me those books. I mean, anyone who knows me knows I'm Barnsley mad. Her especially. But I never expected her to get me them. Over £90 on amazon brand new Life at the Top. Bless her.
I did that with the Redders autobiography. Just pure shivers down the spine/arms/neck from reading certain chapters of it. I'm tempted to get Hodkinson's book on Rochdale.
Wait until you get to the Liverpool home game. Some of the best writing you'll read on any subject ever. Just off to dig my copy out. I don't know where it is and I've suddenly started to panic.
It's when reading such as this book, that I realise why I love writing/typing about my club like I do. But I wish I had that vocabulary. In fact, I'm going to crack open another can of lager and finish the book. And then I'm going to select a passage to use on here as my new signature. I am obsessed with Barnsley Football Club. And proud to be so.
We've been together two years on May 4th. Our first 'anniversary' if you like this year, was the day we stayed up at Huddersfield. Fate? I would love to marry her one day, but I couldn't be happier I don't think, unless my lotto numbers came up tonight. Not checked yet.
A horrible book written by a horrible man, who seemed to think the reader would be find his constant drunken boorish behaviour hilarious. It annoyed the crap out of me and I really had to force myself to read it all the way through.
