Looked a bit upset earlier on. Moaning about being run out by the substitute fielder. Tough look Ricky my heart bleeds. (givinfinger)
Because He said the substitute fielder shouldn't have been on the field. I think the pressure is getting to him....
Yeah, we should have been made to play with 10 fielders obviously. Jones was genuinely injured for christs sake.
But , of course , when an Australian batsman is injured Then it's only right and proper to allow him to have a runner !!!(lol)
I don't think Ponting's beef was about having a substitute fielder on the pitch. After all - Simon Jones was on his way to hospital at the time! His complaint was that he felt they had a specialist fielder on the pitch - which is probably a bit OTT on his part. The Oz. team as a whole though appear to think England are pushing the limits a bit with their constant substitutions whilst (mainly) their bowlers leave the pitch for physio/rest/massage or whatever. They've probably got a point - ask yourself how many substitute fielders appeared during Test matches just a couple of seasons ago. Very rarely by comparison with this series. I personally reckon that the 12th man should be retained for the whole 5 days of the game (and not released after the first two as they do now) - then there can be no complaints re 'specialist' subs etc., As for 'sour grapes' - I reckon it was more annoyance with himself for being slow off the mark for the run than anything else. If he'd been on his toes he'd have been home safe and sound. Can't blame the guy for showing some frustration/emotion - after all he's the captain of the current World Champions who look to be on their way to losing the Ashes. He's probably anticipating the reception he'll get when he lands back in Sydney!
The real point is that their substitute was one of the Test squad. Plus of course, the runner for Clarke was one of the batsmen who had already been out. Having a runner for injured batsmen is nothing new - it's been part of cricket for yonks. The Ozzies gripe is that England appear to pick their substitutes from players of the county where the ground is situated, and that they appear to be 'over-utilising' them. The young lad who was on the park today was like grease lightening - even the commentators mentioned that he stopped a boundary where none of the current England team would have got to the ball! Credit where it's due - in the main the Tests have been played in a good spirit and the Ozzies have accepted some bad decisions from the umpires without any real dissent e.g. Ponting's dismissal in the first innings of this match. Maybe that's why he felt so aggrieved at his second innings' dismissal.
