Been at Oakwell since 1945 hasn't he? Here's his best XI: Norman Rimmington's all-time Barnsley XI: Hill, Hassell, McCarthy, Winstanley, Pallister, Kaye, Glavin, Asquith, Kelly, Ward, Taylor.
No Redfearn or Hignett. Controversial. Obviously, no one's opinion is wrong, it's an opinion not a fact, but I couldn't even begin to argue with that because a lot of those players were before my time. Are we honouring Norman in some way on Saturday? What do you do for someone who is there, a minute's cheering?
Mine: Watson; Eaden, De Zeeuw, Hassell, Davis, Barnard; Hignett, Redfearn, O'Connell; Ward, Shipperley. (5-3-2/3-5-2) Manager: Keith (not really.. Danny Wilson)
O'Connell? Good player and servant to BFC, but wouldn't be in my best XI, Whitey. Ian Banks would deffo make it in midfield.
I had to put Brendan in. It was either him or Shez. I needed one toiler in there, and Brendan edged it because he was my first hero as a young lad growing up. I will never forget his two goals against the Blunts at Oakwell in front of the ready to be demolished Ponty End. If I was going for quality, I'd stick Butterfield or Howard in there instead. Banks was fading when I was a young lad.
Would have to be Fleming for Hassell, maybe Futcher for DeZeeuw (but Tiler pre back pass law would have been a good shout) and Gwyn Thomas for O'Connell. Currie (first spell) for Shipperley
Whitey, fair point. I actually thought of Shez......not the fastest of players, but was strong, aggressive and had a great left peg. I admired O''Connell for his effort and stamina, but let's not forget, he also scored a few at 35 goals in 240 games for Reds. Not bad at all. Perkins at BFC is 2 goals in 69 games.
Was going to have Appleby instead of Hassell in the sweeper role, but I can't pick an all-time XI without Bobby. He is Barnsley, to me. Futch was r old boys favourite defender til he saw Arjan. I loved Currie, but Shipperley was immense. Him and Ward in their pomp? Wow.
I still rate Perkins. In a five man midfield he is as good as you'll find at breaking up play, getting in the opponents faces etc, allowing the others to do their stuff. In a four man midfield he's being asked to do too much. He's not in the same league as Shez or Brendan, though.
We had some cracking centre halves... Smith, Shotton, Futcher, Tiler, Taggart, McCarthy, May, DeZeeuw, Davis..... *sigh*
Brendan had 1 season where he was different class. The year we were told on the PA that we were in the play offs but weren't.
I know its all about opinions but can I just say any team not containing King Ronnie is null and void
Re: I know its all about opinions yep sorry I missed the smiley face off the end, it wasn't really a serious post. Although he is my personal all time fave obviously not everybody is as old as me!
