This song was repeatedly requested on the local Liverpool radio stations on the night of the Hilsborough disaster, another of Gerry's hits, as folk waited anxiously for news of loved ones. He rereleased it as a charity single to raise money for the grieving families.
I knew one of those DJ's Big Lil. He was the late Kenny Johnson who played at the Cavern with his then Band Sonny Webb and the Cascades. He was big mates with Gerry Marsden, the Beatles, the Meseybeats, the Searchers and many more. He was once approached by Brian Epstein to record pop songs, but he refused on the grounds of his loyalty to country music. I booked him times many with his group Northwind at the club I helped to run in Doncaster. He always packed the place out , he was that popular. He was also a DJ on local radio in Liverpool. In the 80's he was voted best U.K. Country singer and invited me to the presentation of the Aria Guitar Award at the Peterborough Festival of Country Music. Kenny had a wicked sense of humour and as the presentation Party lined up for the photo for the local rag, he flipped a fifty pence piece in the air just as the camera shutter was about to click. Everybody on the front row including the Mayor of Peterborough and myself, bent down to pick it up, which caused gales of laughter. https://www.alancackett.com/kenny-johnson
26th April 1997 the day we were promoted to the Premier Division after a 2-0 win against Chris Kamaras Bradford City. I was somewhere in the middle of that lot. A truly memorable day. Bradford fans were so generous in their applause and well wishes that quite a number of Reds fans attended their next home game to help cheer them to a win that saw them narrowly avoid relegation.
Yes, I missed the game. I thought the rendition must be prem season. I live in Sydney. I make most of the big ones... but this one seemed to just happen quickly. Memorable for me too. I was in bed and the match ended around 3.30am. I was more than half asleep. The commentary was always patchy and unreliable back then. But I knew that a goal and we were straight promoted... I heard the Clint goal and we kept the lead, It was a beautiful feeling and still more than half asleep. Over the next week I realised how big the match was to all of us. I realised that the Bradford game was as good as gets in the last fifty years From then on I came over for all the important matches. You can come a cropper too... I came over for a Crewe match. I was there for the West Ham match and the Chelsea 0-6 and Palace away... maybe Bolton. Ipswich and Swansea.... but I missed the Bradford match. (I was at Altrincham) I was at Altringham, too.
