So, the guy is a legend at Oakwell, not quite old enough to have seen him play, how good was he, like in todays market how much would he be worth, i have read about him in programme etc but not from many Barnsley fans
Ronnie Glavin was on par with John Hendrie in status in my opinion, could always make something happen out of nothing! in todays market hed be worth around £3million.
Unbelievably good player only Hignett comes close and he was along way off the standard glavin was. He did everything a midfielder should do playmaker, scored and tackled back.

It's very difficult to compare players of different eras but Glavin was indeed a Legend.
I would say he's the best we have had in midfield in my time a the Oakwell and I've been going since the 50s.
I base that on his all-round game. Ronnie had every thing.
(dancin)

Pure class, had everything. Best player i have ever seen at oakwell, still my hero! (worship) (worship) (worship) (worship) (worship) (worship)
ronnie glavin was the drifter supreme ,,anyone on here not old enough to have seen him play ,,consider yourselves very very unlucky,,my all time barnsley hero...........can you hear the ponty roarin ..................ronnie glavins always scorin ..................can you hear the ponty roarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrring ..................ronnie is our king
this sums him up "can you hear the Ponty roaring" "Ronnie Glavins always scoring" Thats exactly what the entire ground did every time he got the ball. Still sends a tingle down my spine when I think about it.

No finer sight than Ronnie collecting the ball in our half, turning his marker and running at the opposition defence...
The best player i've seen in 30 years at the Well.... by far.. and remember, they tackled properly in them days !!!!

'tackled back'. Glavin rarely tackled back - but he didn't have to. We had two tough midfielders in Ian banks and Ray McHale which allowed Glavin a free role. Deceptive pace despite being on the tubby side, excellent finisher, could shoot short range and long yet his biggest asset was that he could pick the ball up in his own half, run half the length of the pitch and take 3 or 4 opposition players out straight away. They usually couldn't get anywhere near him. Greatest player I have seen at Barnsley. Hignett a close second but couldn't beat a play like Glav could. 3 million for sure in today's markey.
I do agree with all the comments, I was talking about status when comparing the two. Glavin was class!
Ronnie Glavin was the best player in my time to wear the sacred red shirt. What a player and the memories of him are still vivid, I can still hear the ponty end singing when he got the ball. Has to be worth 5 - 6 million in todays market and he would be playing in the premier league, he was that good. One of only 2 true legends (Redfearn being the other) and worth a 1000 of Howard. As far as Barnsley players go this guy is God.
Agreed Only Redders has come close, but Glavin was truly inspirational. Remember him coming off the bench (what was he doing there?) at Hillsborough to score a late winner in '83. Leppings Lane went mental!
He was three palyers rolled into one .... He had the speed and dribbling skills of a winger - which was his original trade at Partick Thistle. He was originally played in that position when he moved to Celtic. He had the ball-playing skills of a centre midfielder and could mix the long and short passing game very well. He had the goalscoring skills of the prolific striker - which was proved by his amazing scoring record whilst playing in midfield at Oakwell. The first game I saw him play was away at Wimbledon, a game which the Reds won thanks to a great set-up by Trevor Aylott and finish from breaking full-back Neil Cooper, but it was Glavin who caught the eye and scored our first goal. A typical burst like a shooting star, cutting in from the left wing, dribbling round a couple of defenders and scoring from a tight angle out on the left of the goal. His pace was unstoppable that night and, had other Reds players read his moves, he would have had a hat trick. A thrilling player to watch in so many ways - whether the incredible run through most of the Fulham team in the 3-2 away win; or the sudden bust of pace to get on the end of a through ball and score; or the brilliant 1:2 to score the decisive goal against Enfield at White Hart Lane. I thought that he lost a bit of his sparkle towards the end of his career, maybe through having been kicked a few too many times - he looked an international standard player (he did play for Scotland) in a Barnsley team - he was a class apart and yet gave his all for the club and never thought he was bigger than the club. The crowd used to buzz whenever he got the ball. Boy could we do with him today!
Scottish International Fell out with Celtic and Clarke picked him up First few games I wasnt impressed - he was out of condition and match fitness then he found his form - regular 20 goal a season midfielder there was a buzz whenever he got the ball. If we could have sold Howard to Wolves for 2 Million in the Summer Ronnie would be worth more like 5million today If you have a look at You Tube there are some clips of early '80's Barnsley - watch and weep I'd forgotton just how good we were Banks would be worth a few million - and if we had Aylott and Parker in todays team we would be playoff contention at least
I can't ever remember him having a bad game for Barnsley.... .... I'm sure he must have done but I can't remember one!!
It may sound daft but watching Christiano Ronaldo in full flight reminds me of Glavin, that direct running at an opponent, waiting for them to commit themselves and then skipping round them, leaving them them for dead. One on one you knew he was going to score.

RE: Ronnie Glavin - the best I've seen in 40+ years Best player at Oakwell in my time - and part of the best Barnsley team alongside Banks, McHale, McCarthy etc. Scored one of the best goals I've seen at Oakwell, against Shrewsbury Town. A corner at the Ponty End goes to Macca, who backheaded it towards Glavin who had his back to the goal. Ronnie did a bicycle kick, into the top corner. MAGIC! Easily worth £5 million in today's market.
