From International Football http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/41027204 Personally thought he was the equivalent of a flat-track bully and never really produced it when it mattered.
wrong decision for me that as i think he still as a lot to offer but i can see why he's done it. I guess he doesnt want to be a bit part player which is clearly what he was going to be under Southgate.
England players have collectively been failing to produce it when it matters for decades. We've got to the point where we sail through qualifiers and win the odd friendly against a top team. Just enough to raise expectations. Take away their foreign team mates and they're a pretty bang average lot, which explains why not many of our players go abroad to play. Rooney is no different to the rest of them.
Kane, Vardy, Rashford (who will undoubtedley be played on the left) Sturridge (always injured) and Defoe (35 years old now). Not much left to go on in the striking department now.
He was always let down by not having a top drawer strike partner. Teams could focus upon him and mark him out of the game, or make him drop so deep as to be completely ineffectual. Michael Owen on the shoulder of the defence with Rooney slightly behind would have been amazing, but we never got to see that much of it.
To be fair he's probably not going to get in the starting 11 much in the future. The thing I think is weird about it is that when record holders for other countries retire they get celebrated by fans, whereas we just seem to slag the players off the majority of time.
Regardless of the money he's been a wonderful servant to clubs and country only the most bitter of people would argue with that
He's been a world class player for United, and it's great to see him doing well so far in his return to Everton. I think he could have done so much better for England but unfortunately for the last 6 years or so he's been playing with some awful footballers in the national side. We replaced scholes with the likes of Henderson and then had to out up with players like Walcott and Stewart Downing. Had he had the service like Klose and co had for Germany then he would have netted 70 goals for england. Unfortunately our national side is a joke.
Rooney was hardly ever played as an out and out striker. He set the world on fire and then managers started tinkering into other positions. Some even played him as an outright midfielder.
Exceptional player. Never quite did it for England when it came to the tournaments, but who has over the last decade. Not many will have the career he's had. 31 years old, all time top scorer for both Man United and England and has won it all at club level. I hope he gets the credit he deserves when people look back on his career.
I agree DR. Lineker has been on TV commenting on Rooneys decision to quit England. He said that in his opinion , over the last five or six seasons, Rooney has been the only World class player in the England set up. It's a sad fact that the influx of overseas players now performing in the Premiership is stifling the talent of our own youngsters who could possibly develop into future internationals. Everton seem to be bucking the trend in that regard with as many as eight British players being included in their line up. Hopefully they will benefit from having Rooney in the side and some of them could play a part in England's international future.
Spurs and Southampton brought on good contingent of English players, agree once we leave EU, can put restrictions on numbers of players if we think it desirable.
Rooney seemed to take criticism all his career for not being as good as we want him to be. Always given everything played in a variety of postions by managers who couldn't work out what to with him. A record for club and country that stands up as one of the best you will see by a Englishmen. For me a legends and we have been lucky to have him.
