Sorry if already posted but this is one of the best bits of football writing I've read for a long time. There but for the grace of God, etc..... http://thetwounfortunates.com/rotherham-united-no-longer-the-same-club/
great piece.... shame because its not moaning about the club this thread hasn't had many more readers, i liked this bit , could be about us Generally, any successes have been earned by honest hard work and graft, by taking cast off, under-rated or local players, improving them and making them greater as a team than the sum of their collective parts. We’ve accepted our place as a club for whom success is a welcome stranger rather than a familiar house guest. and we might have been guilty for this one........ the loss of our manager and the entire coaching staff just as we seemed to be on the brink of something tangible
Thanks for posting that. must admit to having a bit of a soft spot for rotherham unlike the 2 sheffield clubs and would like to see them do well - had a few good days and bad days at the old Millmoor - which despite being a really ***** ground did have some character. I can see where the guy is coming from and unfortunately hope that they fail with Evans as manager - I wouldnt want him near our club either
A good read Sad state of affairs when an obviously committed supporter of many years gets to feel like this. I have to admit to similar feelings myself with regard to Barnsley, somehow it just isn't the same club as it was just a few short years ago.
Excellent. I recall my disappointment as a child of 12, when I heard "Sports Report" with Raymond Glendenning, announcing that Rotherham had been pipped for the No. 2 slot in the old Second Division by Birminham City, on goal average, and had thus failed to achieve First Division status. The same season, we were promoted as Champions of Division 3N, after a somewhat hard struggle with Accringron Stanley and S****horpe United. The same year York City, were defeated semi-finalists in the FA Cup. God I feel old.
Me too - thanks for posting that. A wonderful piece of writing. I feel considerable affinity for that guy - not least of all because I've worked in Rotherham for 17 of the last 21 years. But I also feel affinity because Barnsley FC feels nothing like the club I have followed on and off since 1968. Oakwell has become a soulless place. Gone are the days when the chants of away fans of even 'big' teams evaporated above the old open Spion Kop. Now they have a bigger end than the home fans, who themselves have lost their wit and braggadocio. In place of a club who refused to raise season ticket prices because we were Premier League, we have a cost-cutting, quality-reducing administration which still has the nerve to put up admission charges and price out hard-pressed fans or those who simply demand value. A club which is a PR disaster and which instead of using a website to generate interest, uses it to milk the last quid out of less-discerning sorts. Let's hope - if we dare to - that the next chapter in the BFC story represents a return to our former values.
I wonder if fans of the bigger clubs taken over by money bags owners to transform their teams outlook had as much emotion and passion?
