they could get the man utd real or barca manager and they'd fail with England, the mentality of the English players int right to be a winner a the highest level, when there doing it for free, they only give a **** about the club that feeds them,
No, I think he is a top class manager too, arguably the best English manager in the game. I think he'll be a very good appointment if the journo's and prima-dona players give him a chance.
I think he's far less likely to pander to the big egos than Redknapp, who has an ego the size of a house himself. Hodgson will overhaul the whole set-up from youth level, and run it like a club. That can only be a good thing in my opinion. Plus he's the only English candidate who already has international experience. All too often the FA have made the mistake of appointing successful club managers who do not know the international game. A good club manager does not necessarily make a good international coach and vice versa.
The key is whether the press give him a chance, which so far would seem to be "no". He has international experience and did well with Switzerland, getting them to the '94 World Cup finals (now where were England that year?), it was either the first time they'd qualified, or at least the first time for decades. Certainly don't see why Redknapp is necessarily a better man for the job over him.
No, I agree with you. He'll take a view of all of English football not just the elite. Not sure Redknapp would do that.
I think it's a cracking appointment. When Capello left I was all for Harry, but the more I've thought about it the less I want him.
There's more than a touch of the Uncle Bobby (Robson) about Woy. Seems a thoroughly decent, thoughtful, and erudite bloke, who can also already bring previous successful international experience to the table, therefore almost the polar opposite of 'people's choice' (according to a handful of football writers) Redknapp, who as we all know is (ahem) dodgy. Allegedly. Heard the worthless opinion of one such football writer on Radio 5 Live this morning, who was saying that Steven Gerrard had apparently expressed some concerns about Woy's coaching when he was in charge at Liverpool, though naturally he failed to then speculate further as to why such a key failing for a manager/coach has not been an issue at West Brom since he took over.
I think there are a lot of people, including myself, who think Hodgson is a very good choice indeed. However, that will sell nowhere near enough papers so the press will be straight on his back no doubt. I just hope the English public (not much chance of this) are sensible for a change and give him a chance.
Yeah, I was thinking that myself this morning. He was nobody's fool though. It also came to mind the appaling treatment that he got from the press during his time as England manager - these same hacks are the ones that subsequently talk of him in glowing terms...
Re: If as his first act in charge, he sacks Stuart Pearce I think Hodgson is just about the best possible candidate for the England job at the moment. Hiring someone like Guardiola (like I've seen some people suggest) would have been a big mistake in my opinion - England just don't have the players that would fit his Barca-style approach, and I don't think that Guardiola could adapt to a new style either. Hodgson had a short spell as manager of the Finnish national team a few years ago, and even if we failed to qualify for Euro 2008, I think he did a pretty good job. Admittedly he did have probably the "golden generation" of Finnish players to work with, but we've never come that close to qualifying before (except for the World Cup 1998) and we were playing pretty well against bigger teams too. It wasn't too pretty to watch though, our tactics were very defensive, we played a lot of 0-0 draws and I think we scored less than 1 goal per match on average during the Euro 2008 qualifiers...
Re: If as his first act in charge, he sacks Stuart Pearce Bad appointment. Great manager but Ferdinand, Gerrard et al have already thrown their weight behind dodgy 'Arry. No doubt they'll all get monk on and not perform for Roy.
Re: If as his first act in charge, he sacks Stuart Pearce Thats OK then - just dont pick em Its not like we have over achieved with them playing is it
