Rumours that Birmingham City have accepted a bid for third choice goalkeeper Nick Townsend from Barnsley FC.
Townsend, 20, has yet to play a first team game for Birmingham City but has made 31 appearances in two loan spells for Vanarama National League side Lincoln City.
Barnsley’s first choice keeper Ross Turnbull joined Leeds United on a free transfer on July 15 leaving the Tykes with 23 year-old Adam Davies and rookie Christian Dibble as their first team keepers and the signing of Townsend would boost their ranks significantly.
Townsend isn’t expected to figure in the Blues first team this season following the signing of Tomasz Kuszczak and Adam Legzdins and with Connal Trueman and Jake Weaver as backup the sale of Townsend may well be seen as good business for a position where Blues are well-stocked.
Townsend signed a two-year deal with Birmingham City in May of this year. The club have as yet declined to comment on the rumour.

Would rather have Dibble as second choice

Not surprised we're looking at another keeper because there will be times when one isn't available e.g when Dibble us on international duty. Though I think it would make more sense to get an experienced keeper imo

Rather us have Dibble as back up and if anything significant happens to Davies then go and loan someone in to cover it.

    At 5ft 11 he's short for a keeper.

For me this would be a pointless signing.

We need someone ready to step straight in if Davies is going through dodgy spell.

I'd rather have Dibble on the bench and sign a keeper on loan if needed that sign another young lad.

I know there's reasons for this, but frustrates me that the likes of Turnbull, Bailey and Lalkovic, plus Jennings are all available for free, but we may be paying a small fee for a kid with no experience. Unless he's got serioius potential, why not just make Dibble No2 or promote an academt goalkeeper?

He hasn't got serious potential. Will be a League 2 goalkeeper at the most

This signing would be as bizarre as signing that young inexperienced third choice goalkeeper we signed from Wednesday last season.

    What was his name?

Wildsmith who we signed when we had no available keepers at all?

I was referring to Adam Davies.

Forgot about Wildsmith to be honest.

But I'd see signing this lad no different to signing Davies last season in my opinion. 3 choice championship keeper brought in as back up to Turnbull. And he looked dire on first impression.

So we give away a keeper for free to a Championship club who has Premier League and Champions League experience, realise we're now short in that position and buy a player with no league experience at all who is 3rd choice at his club with little chance of getting in the side.

    We're ******* nicked

The wages being the obvious difference. We couldn't afford to keep Turnbull for the bench.

None of us yet know how Davies will perform this season. Not you, me nor the manager. He's started just 24 professional games. I enjoyed watching his performances last season, I thought he played really well, even early on when he was getting all the grief. But it will be very unusual for someone with so little experience not to have a dip in form. When goalkeepers have a dip in form they cost the team games. It's probably the most important position on the pitch. To dispense with our only experienced keeper when Davies is still learning the game seems daft to me. To let him go for free and then pay for another inexperienced keeper takes that daftness to new heights, even for us.

It's not so long ago that a good deal of people who are claiming we don't need Turnbull were banging on about how **** he Davies is.

Whether this lad is the right choice I have no idea but we really couldn't afford to plan to have such a large wage sat on the bench.

I'd love us to sign another experienced gk but if we're planning on Davies being our no1 then it'd again be a big wage on the bench.

I'd like to think we'd stick with Davies if he does have a couple of bad games, playing is the best way for a gk to recapture form, the added confidence of knowing you're no1 and not gonna be dropped for a couple of poor games.

We can always utilise the loan market if we really feel the need.
